Biography

A prolific baseball home-run hitter, he holds the major-league career record for at-bats per home run ratio

Mark David McGwire was born in 1963. His parents are John Thomas McGwire and Virginia Ann Huseman. He was a professional baseball player. [1] [2] [3] [4] He participated in the 1984 summer Olympics in baseball when it was a non-medal sport. [5]

Major League Baseball Highlighted Events

  • In 1987, he hit 49 home runs (then a record) to set a rookie record and was the American League Rookie of the Year. [6]
  • Former record holder for both home runs in a single season (70 in 1998). With the Cardinals in 1998, he battled Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa to eclipse the single-season home-run record previously held by Roger Maris in 1961.
  • 11th all-time in home runs with 583.
  • A career .394 on-base percentage (OBP).
  • Two-time major league leader in walks.
  • Elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1998.
  • In a 2005 list of the 100 greatest baseball players, The Sporting News ranked him at number 84.
