I was born in Sylva (Jackson County) North Carolina in 1951 to Olin C. Monteith and Hazel Haskett Monteith, who had a daughter, Pamela Lynn eight years later. I received the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from UNC- Chapel Hill in 1975 and Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1978. I was hired as Artist in Residence at Paris Gibson Square in Great Falls, Montana in 1980 and was Visiting Instructor of Art at the University of Montana in Missoula in 1983. Moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 1984, I was hired as Chief Preparator for the Washington Project for the Arts and lived across the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia. I was hired by Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois in 1990, where I continue to work as Professor of Art. I live with my wife, Mary Ellen Watkin and my son, Matthew (1992) in Cobden, Illinois, south of Carbondale.
From what I know, the first of my Monteith ancestors came from Scotland and ended up in Mecklenburg County where he died. Later, his descendants ended up in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, in and around what would become the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). On my father's maternal side were Cables, who lived in Cades Cove, Tennessee, also in GSMNP. This side of the family also came from Scotland.
