Biography

From: A Blakey book:. 1983.

Note about the parents of Nichols-5193

James Nichols writes, "Richard, I think McComb-261 and Nickell-2 were the parents of Nichols-5193. According to my mothers book "The Final Irony" Nickell-2 was born around 1700 in Ireland and was the Nichols to come across the pond. I'm not sure where she got the birthdate. In Chalkleys vol 3, page 563 there is an entry "373 Page 427.— 18th August, 1760. John ( ) Nicolas (Nickle) and Barbra ( ) to his son John Nicolas, £5, 250 acres on Moffett's Branch of Middle River, part of 400 acres patented to William King, 10th February, 1748, and conveyed to said Nicolas. Delivered : John Nickel, February, 1767." So he may not be writer of the 1774 will??? Still looking. Jim Nichols"

From Gortin

Gortin (from Irish: an Goirtín, meaning "the small enclosed field")[1] is a village and townland in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is ten miles (16 km) north of Omagh in the valley of the Owenkillew river, overlooked by the Sperrins. It had a population of 360 at the 2001 Census. [1]

Name

Name: John /Nichols/[2]

Alternate Birth

Alternate Birth Place: Bedomy, Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland
Alternate Birth Years: 1700 and 1728
According to A Blakey book : being an account of those believed to be descended from Thomas and Susannah Blakey of Christ Church parish, Middlesex County, Virginia by B.B. Blakey, John was born about 1728. How does this square with all the facts? If he was born before 1738, I don't suppose he married before he was ten years old. Which date should we use? More data for consideration I found while cleaning out things for a move today:

One is an excerpt from an in print only book that I copied but no longer have in my possession (Citation first)

  • Nickell, Carol Ann and Joseph Donald Nickell. Chronological Genealogy of the John Nickell Line: County Ulster, Ireland, ca 1728 to the Present. Santa Fe, New Mexico: C.A. and D. Nickell, 199?.

- The excerpt has been reprinted or copied to other websites like geni.com etc (which I don't use but it isn't my original writing so

"JOHN NICKEL, bought 400 Acres land from William King for "the sun of five shillings and other valuable consideretions", in November 27, 1749,located in Augusta County, on Moffett's Branch of Cathey's River. John Nickell reported his birth place as "County Ulster, Ireland. He married Barbara McCombe, who with her brother, Andrew McCombe were executors of John Nickell's estate. His sons all settled on the Greenbriar River in what was Stanton (during what was known as "the "War between the States") Monroe County, West Virginia.
"John Nickell was the head of a large family, many of whom lived in Augusta and Monroe Counties, and later migrated west to Kentucky and Missouri, among other states..."

- My notes go on to say there wasn't a Stanton but a Staunton- which makes since within the date parameters.

For the McCombe marriage question the 1755 date seems closest if not exact for several reasons, but mostly the children's birth dates and the deductions made for which issue was from which spouse.
Furthermore he writes "...John Nickell married one of the Lewis girls, with whom he had five children, one of whom (the fourth child) was Joseph Nickell, born on 10 January 1750." This date is given from another researcher as well which at least in part shows that the Nickell / McCombe marriage was after 1750.
  • The argument I was trying to decipher was more on his birth year and these two researchers were the basis for my questions so if anyone knows about either please reply:
- In 1932 Joe Nickell's "Nickell Family Chronological Genealogy" he wrote the following (for brevity&bc some of these have been quoted elsewhere online- I'm summarizing the main points&quoting exact phrases):
"John Nickell immigrated from Ulster, County Tyrone, Ireland, near the town of Gortin..." (explanation of Gortin locale in relation to Scotland and why he'd settle with community who would later be called "Scotts-Irish") to settle in Augusta County, VA ca 1738. He found "several families" near Staunton surnamed Nickell still settled in 1932.
He references the same data above re: "In 1749, he bought a plantation of 400 acres on Moffett's Branch..." but adds "(in) a Scotch-Irish settlement" abt 10mi. NW of "present city of Staunton, VA."
"John married Barbara McCombe, the daughter of Rebekah Young McCombe and granddaughter of John Young, Jr., and they had seven children (Susannah not listed)." All of the children to this union were born in Augusta and his six sons served for "American Independence in the Revolution against the French and Indians in 1758."
"He granted his eldest son, John, the greater part of the Plantation in Augusta..." and all other children resided by the Greenbrier River, then went west.
  • "Demoy W. Schulz, a "long respected" Nickell family researcher (1994):"
His (theory) in his words was "Barbara (McCombe) was a minor when they 'married' in 1755 and that John's will (dated Mar 24, 1755) was, in essence, a marriage contract. This, then, would make children John, b.1838; Joseph, b.1740; Isaac, b.1750; and Elizabeth, b.1854; (definitely) from a first marriage."
"In 1760 John Nickell, Sr., deeded son, John Jr., 250 A of his Moffitt Creek farm for 5 lbs - the land he'd willed him in 1755. It is reasonable to assume that John Jr. was 21 when his father deeded him the land. And - since Thomas Sr., his 2nd son, but not necessarily his 2nd child, was a father in 1761. According to the gravestone inscription of his oldest child, Margaret Nickell McCallister, he must have been born no later than 1743. Thomas Sr., may have married young since he evidently had problems accepting his step-mother - but surely not at age 15 or 16."
" Those two facts led (him) to the assumption that John Nickell, Sr., was born nearer 1715/20 than 1728" (per data extrapolated from Gen. Joe Nickell's 1932 work and Castle's cited above that).
He continues to expound that the 1728 date "...may have come from an article in the 5th Series of The Pennsylvania Archives, Vol. #1, which states John NICHOLAS, age 30, from Bedoney, Ireland, volunteered for the Expedition to Western PA in 1758. According to the Typographical Dictionary of Ireland by Samuel Lewis, Gortin is a village in the parish of Lower Badony (Bedoney)" more geographical data already in the bio explained here-
More research collected from others has shown me his assumption holds merit in that there are multiple records listing a man named John Nicholas buying / selling land in Augusta, VA concurrent to the time of "our" John Nickell residing in Augusta County.
Schultz uses this along with his derivations to assert "It was most likely John Nicholas- not John Nickell, Sr. who went on that expedition."

This is SO confusing!

I just removed McComb-261 and Nickell-2 as the parents of John James Nichols (Nichols-5193)

John James Nichols (Nichols-5193) was born in 1726 and Nickell-2 was born in 1720. This doesn't work. Haste makes waste. It has been wrong for a long time. I'll just keep working on this until it's right. I need help.

Nichols-3483 and Nickell-2 appear to represent the same person because: This merge proposal is part of a much larger effort to combine/merge the many duplicate profiles for John Nichols/Nickell and and his wife Barbara McComb(e). Nichols and Nickel are common spellings for this name, but the majority of references to him are spelled, "Nickell."

The direction of this merge must be from Nichols-3483 into Nickell-2.
