Anne Norton[1]
Born 1612 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[2][3] Died at age 32 on May 23, 1644 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States[3]
In the late spring or early summer of 1641 (judging by the dates of preceding and following records), "Ann Norton of Hingham widowe of William Norton her late husband deceased complaines against Mr. Samuel Warde of Hingham" in a case arising from an earlier land transaction between Warde and her late husband.[4]
"The widow Norton" married John Tucker on 11 June 1651.[5]
"Probate records show that the estate of William Nolton, deceased, was appraised Sept. 18, 1661 [shortly after the death of John Tucker on Aug. 5, per Rev. Hobart's journal --JSS], showing real estate £88, which comprised the same lots of land granted him in 1635 to 1637, and that his widow Ann and granddaughter Susanna were appointed administrators of his estate Oct. 23, 1667. On January or June 9, 1668, the estate of Ann Nolton, widow, was appraised, at her own request, showing personal, £35-16-6, and Sept. 26, 1668, 'Ann Tucker, late wife of William Nolton', presents an inventory of the estate of 'the late William Nolton, her former husband.'
"Widow Ann Tucker died Oct. 8, 1675, leaving a will dated Sept. 21, proved Oct. 26, 1675, giving all her property to 'Paul Gilford, her grandchild, and Susanna Jewell, grandchild, sister of Paul. and names, in case of their death, her niece Elizabeth, wife of Nicholas Knell, of Stratford, Conn. (This Elizabeth Knell was Elizabeth, dau. of Gov. Francis Newman of New Haven, Conn., and widow of Thomas Knowles when she m. Nicholas Knell, a planter of Stratford, Conn., in 1650. See Orcutt's History of Stratford, Conn.)" [6]
The Errata and Addenda to the unreliable old Knowlton genealogy supposes that Ann's husband William Nolton of Hingham (d. 1639) was the same person as a legendary Captain William Knowlton, the alleged father of the three Knowlton brothers who settled in Ipswich. There are primary source records showing the existence of William Nolton/Norton of Hingham, mentioning his wife Ann and two grandchildren, Susanna Jewell and Paul Guilford. There is no primary source documentation for the existence of William Knowlton, imagined sea captain who died in 1632, just a story about a gravestone that was found in Nova Scotia in the 19th century.
There is a further claim that Ann, the alleged wife of the alleged sea captain William Knowlton, was the daughter of Richard Smith and Eliza Canty. There is no known evidence to back up such a claim.
