[Note: CONFLICT: Most sources indicate Sarah, daughter of Francis and Rebecca Nurse married Michael Bowden. In Salem Witch Records, it is indicated that Sarah was 28 years. in 1692, testifying for her mother, so she was born about 1663/1664. Other sources indicate that Sarah married Michael Bowden at Topsfield in December 1669, which would make her about 6 years old at that time. It appears that this is not the same couple, or the Topsfield related dates are incorrect: NURSE, Sarah, and Michael Bauden, December 15, 1669. see: Topsfield VR: Marriages p. 168]

[NOTE: There is a Michael Bowdon who married Sarah Davis of Lynn, in 1697, which would be a different family of Bowden's, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6QV9-HW2?i=13&cc=2061550&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQP8D-V5GB

Biography

Francis Nurse of Salem, born England, January 18, 1618, married August 24, 1644 Rebecca Towne, daughter of William Towne and Jane Blessing of Yarmouth England. Rebecca Towne was baptized February 16, 1621 and hanged as a witch on July 19, 1692. [1] [2]

Their daughter Sarah, was born about 1663/1664, based on her own deposition:

Sarah Nurse aged 28, testified at the witch trial of her mother Rebecca at Salem on June 29, 1692. [3] [4]
NOTE: Do we know for certain that the deponent was Rebecca's daughter?

It appears that after the court-sanctioned murder of Rebecca, Sarah, with her father and two sisters joined the church in Reading:

[1693] May Eliz. Russell, Sarah Nurse, Francis Nurse, Mary Brown owned ye covenant.[5]

Some believe that about 1694, 2 years after her mothers death, she married Michael Bowden/Baudin [6] [4] [1] But the original records clearly name the bride "Sarah Davis."[7] unless she was previously married to a Davis.

That one of Francis' daughters was married to a Michael Bowden is suggested by the 1694 will of Sarah's father:

In 1694, her father, Francis Nurse equally divided his estate among his eight children: John, Samuel, Francis and Benjamin Nurse, Michael Bowden, Thomas Preston, John Tarbell and William Russell. [8] [9]

Note the following is uncertain - as to Sarah Nurse or Sarah Davis ]

? Michael died at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1740/1741. [10]

Michael Bowden wrote his last Will on September 26, 1741, leaving his entire estate to his wife Sarah, as sole executor, during her lifetime. After her decease the estate was to be divided 'among all my children'. [11]

On December 30, 1741, widow Sarah Bowden, submitted her acknowledgement of the inventory of the estate of Michael Bowden, of Lynn, Massachusetts, deceased. [11]

?Widow Sarah Bowden died at Lynn on September 1, 1754. [10]

This is believed to have been Sarah Davis Bowden.

Nurse-165 and Nurse-99 appear to represent the same person because: To be frank, Nurse-165 is a useless profile with no sources, which was imported via gedcom in 2013 and essentially hasn't been changed at all since. I think it's most likely supposed to yet another version of Nurse-99, with yet another guess as to her birth date and place (probably wrong).

Just doing some research here again and I can see that Michael Bowden and Sarah (Nurse) Bowden had a son, Michael Bowden/Bouden that would be a Junior. The SON of Michael Bowden Sr and Sarah (Nurse) married Sarah Davis after 20 Nov 1697 in Lynn, MA. He died 1 Oct 1741.

His children with Sarah (Davis) Boudon (another variation of the name on this record) were:

Susanna b. 13 Sep 1699 Francis b. 1 Jun 1701(hard to read last number) Sarah b. 16 Dec 1702 Martha & Mary (Twins) b. 19 Jul 1705 Hanah b. 15 Aug 1707 John b. 29 Jul 1709 Susanna died 30 Jul 1709 Liddea(??) b 15 Aug 1712 Michail 6 Sep 1714 Ebonozor 6 Aug 1716 (??) their daughter b. 29 Oct 1717 Benjamin b. 1 Feb 1721/2

Some additional information concerning a Sarah Nurse who married Michael Bowden. "Michael Bowden, later of Marblehead. He, planter, conveyed to Samuel Nurse for 4 pounds his wife's share in the Francis Nurse house and her proportion, about 15 acres, in his estate on Dec. 5, 1695." From the book, Massachusetts and Maine Families, by Walter Goodwin Davis, Volume III, page 70. I believe this Samuel Nurse would have been her brother. Dee image 1

I am aware of the confusion of two different Sarah Nurse's. This profile is based on Salem Witch Papers showing Sarah Nurse was aged 28 on June 29, 1692 when she testified. Don't know if the link will bring you to the original document or not but says aged 28]

( Testimony of Sarah Nurse Regarding Sarah Bibber, in Support of Rebecca Nurse )

How do we know that Sarah who testified was daughter of Rebecca Nurse? Could she have been a daughter-in-law?

How do we know that the Sarah who married about 1694 Michael Bowden was Sarah Nurse? While there are three citations here supporting that, none of the citations, as currently written, quote any supporting evidence.

I replied on the pending merge with the citation... it is written Sarah N[urse] married Michaell Bouden in the MA Vital records that they did themselves... why is what is considered a primary source not enough evidence for you?

There is a genealogy book for the Nurse family accepted on Rebecca's wikitree as a legitimate source that also shows Sarah married Michael.... this is the direct link to the source: https://archive.org/details/putnamsmonthlyh189293putn/page/n231/mode/2up

Putnam's monthly historical magazine by Putnam, Eden, 1868-1933

Image page number 240 is page 100 in the book (they did not print on both sides of the pages)

I won't post sources to both profiles, but just showing you here.

Also on the other profile you are saying Rebecca Nurse's daughter testified she was 28... but on this profile you question it. You are talking essentially out of both sides of your mouth here.... either they need to be merged and keep the parents, or remove the parents off the one you think is not her and notate why until further evidence is given... but if you truly don't think the evidence supports it then it should be a denied match and resolved as it has been about 3 years in a pending stage.

That is part of the conflict, that the Sarah Nurse aged 28 who testified in 1692 could be daughter or daughter-in-law and in the 1669 marriage of Micheal Baudin to Sarah N [urse] the transcription has the [urse] added, but the supposed original just said Sarah N so it is speculation ( probably from the will naming Micheal Bowdin) that this Sarah N..... must have been Nurse.

PS looking at the transcription it actually looks like the N part of N[urse] was also added and not part of the original that just said Micheal Baudin and & Sarah maryed th 15 of December 1669.

The Sarah Nurse who deposed in 1692 could have been Rebecca's daughter-in-law; Rebecca's son Francis [Jr], married a Sarah about 1685.

But we still have the father's 1695 probate that lists Michael Bowden among his children...

The only thing I found this morning, anyway, was a 1694 move of a group of Nurse family members to Reading, Massachusetts:

It appears that after the court-sanctioned murder of Rebecca, Nurse family members joined the church in Reading:

[1693] May Eliz. Russell, Sarah Nurse, Francis Nurse, Mary Brown owned ye covenant.<ref>"Church Records of the old town of Reading, Massachusetts," in The Essex Genealogist, (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2018.), vol 9, p 74 (membership required)</ref>

Elizabeth Russell, was likely Elizabeth Nurse who m. Russell;

Sarah Nurse could either be a single daughter of Francis, OR (more likely?) the wife of Francis Nurse [Jr]. We know from other records that Francis Jr removed to Reading, so the "Francis" here is likely the son, not the father. Not sure who Mary Brown is.

To add to the confusion there are minimal records of Micheal Baudin/Bowden. So where there 2 of them? Is Micheal that married Sarah Davis in 1697 the same Micheal Bowdin in Francis Nurse's will - possibly widowed - or a separate younger Micheal. And which Micheal died in 1740?
posted by Chris Hoyt
Yes, there were TWO Michael Bowden and they both married a Sarah... Of course one was Sarah Nurse and the other Sarah Davis. See my note and citation above..

Michael Bowden and Sarah (Nurse) Bowden had a son, who would have been a Jr but of course documents then did not stipulate that... and HE married a Sarah Davis. When you look at the birth information for the second Michael Bowden and the Sarah Davis you know it would not be possible for Sarah Davis to be the wife of Michael Bowden Sr.

I have tried to add sources on FamilySearch and am working on attaching them to their profiles now.

There should be no confusion when you compare the timelines.

Her testimony says or thereabouts ... so she is not saying her confirmed birth date in her testimony...

I am still researching, so I agree this can be a separate profile with no parents as the document does not say her relation to anyone but just her name and her approximate age.

Can someone please find the original 1692 testimony of Sarah, daughter of Rebecca Nurse, so we can check the age given? Thanks.
