Herbert Patfield was born on 11th July 1872 in Paterson, New South Wales (Australia), to Samuel Patfield and Sarah Australia (Giles) Patfield. [1][2]
Herbert married Caroline Kimber on 1st February 1896 in Paterson. [3][4]
Herbert played cricket for Paterson Cricket Club. He was elected Vice President of the Club in 1909.
A Mariner rather than a Farmer like many in his family, Herbert was the Master of the SS Marie, a steamer on the Hunter River between Morpeth and Paterson.
Herbert died on 2nd September 1953 as the result of a train accident at Teralba, New South Wales.[5][6] and was buried at Campbells Hill Cemetery in Maitland, New South Wales.
Old Man's Body On Rail Line The body of Herbert Patfield, 81, retired master mariner, was found beside the railway line near Teralba station yesterday morning. It is believed Patfield was struck by a train. Patfield, who lived with his son-in-law, Mr. J. S. McLachIan, Stationmaster at Teralba, left home about 9.45 a.m. to set some tobacco. About 10 am. the crew of a train running to Toronto saw the body beside the line.
