Thomas Pitman was born in Somerset, England.

Thomas Pitman, the son of Johannis (John) Pittman was born in 1612 and baptized on 24 December of that year at Wedmore, Somerset, England.^[1]

Mark Pitman born 1622 and Thomas Pitman born 1614 settled at Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts.^[2][3] Based on their ages they were probably brothers. Thomas Pitman first appeared in Marblehead in 1645. He was a 'householder', constable and served on the Grand Jury. He was a fisherman and owner of considerable property in Marblehead.^[6]

This profile shows he was born about 1614 - according to various depositions in Marblehead, he was age 55 years in June 1669, and 66 years in September 1670^[7]

Marriage and Children

His wife was Joanna or Jane. They were married in Salem, and lived in the part that was renamed Marblehead in 1649^{[8] [9]}

Their children included:

1. Joseph Pitman (born 1653), whose wife was Elizabeth, and who was living in 1694^[10]
2. Sarah Pitman (born 1646, died 1717), who married Thomas Dodd by 1664, Salem, MA, and was living in 1694^[10]
3. Mary Pitman (born 1648, died 1734), who married Elias Fortune and was living in 1694^[10]
4. Elizabeth Pitman (born 1650, died 1691), who married first Henry Russell and 2nd Jacob Knight, and predeceased her father^[10]
5. John Pitman, (born 1654/1660, died 1705), whose wife was Charity Gale, and who predeceased his father^{[10] [11]}
6. Thomas Pitman, Jr, (born 1652, died 1736) was 17 years old in June 1669^[7], who was executor of his father's will^[10], he married Margaret, daughter of Alexander Gould and Margaret Brown, and widow of James Stilson on 30 March 1696, and who died in 1736
7. Another son who predeceased his father. (Thomas had 4 sons in June 1670)^[7]

Death

Thomas Pitman died on 16 September 1694 in his 82nd year at Marblehead, Massachusetts. His property was divided, according to will, among his children, namely: Joseph Pitman, Sarah Dodd, Mary For- tune and the children of his son John, and daughter Elizabeth Knight, who died before the making of the will, and Thomas Pitman, Jr., to whom the heirs evidently sold out in 1696-1697.^[12][11]. HIs will was dated May 24, 1694, the probate case was opened September 3, 1694, and the estate was administered October 22, 1696^{[13] [10]}

His wife was not noted in his will, so it is assumed that she predeceased him.
