Conflated Margarets

NOTE: This Margaret has been mistaken for Margaret Unknown. This Margaret was not a wife of either William Oddyn or John Porter.

It is probable that this Margaret did not exist, as no reliable, quality sources have yet been found to confirm her existence.

The Puritan Great Migration Project category has been removed but since John Porter is part of the PGM Project, "Puritan Great Migration Adjunct" is being applied to this profile so that it can be monitored to avoid re-creation or attempted re-attachment to either of those men.

Biography

If this Margaret existed, there have yet to be any records confirming her name, her parents, a birth place, or birth date.

A privately pubished newsletter of some sort, titled, "The Dinghy"[1] seems to have published family group sheets or pedigree charts and includes references to Margaret Lang who is listed next to George Odding[2] According to an earlier version of this profile, in Vol 4, No. 3, on p. 19 of "The Dinghy," it says that Margaret's last name was possibly Land, not Lang. {if someone has access to these newsletters and can provide more accurate information about what they contain, please do so}

Searches for a "Margaret Land" provided no better results than Margaret Lang in determining if this woman really existed.

The data fields and bio have been updated to reflect the most likely scenario that this person never existed. The marriage to George Odding has been severed so that hopefully fewer (no?) attempts at reconnecting this profile to William Oddyn or John Porter.

The Puritan Great Migration Project category has been removed but since John Porter is part of the PGM Project, "Puritan Great Migration Adjunct" is being applied to this profile so that it can be monitored to avoid re-creation or attempted re-attachment to either of those men.

Unknown-226383 and Lang-386 do not represent the same person because: Margaret Lang is not Margaret Unknown. No proof of a Lang Marriage to John Porter or William Oddyn.

As there is no evidence of John Porter of Portsmouth, RI marriage to a Margaret Lang, I have removed him as her husband. I believe she has been conflated with Margaret Unknown and have removed references to Margaret Unknown from this profile. This family would benefit from soild sourcing.

Found no source to establish the existance of Lang as surname or daugher of John Lang and Joanna Van Aelst.

It has been established that Sarah Odding who married Sherman is not the daughter of George Odding and Margaret Lang. I have removed her as a daughter.

What is the source Dinghy? The surname Lang/Lang seems to be in error.

Torrey's index appears to not support a marriage to George Odding, Patricia Hatcher work clears up this by documenting Margaret's husband as William. Thus we need to detach George from Margaret.

The text of this bio appears to copied from Hatcher.

I believe the mix up is that John Porter married Margaret (unknown) Odding, wife of William Odding and had daughter Sarah. See Sherman. Hatcher in TAG 73 sorts this out. George needs to be removed as husband of Margaret and William needs to be created and added as husband and father.

George Odding and wife Lang should be reviewed for sourcing.

The marriage to John Porter-152 appears to be incorrect, as George Odding appears to be her first husband based on the child Sarah born in 1608. George lived until 1633, so John Porter-152 could not have been married to her at the same time. Looking at the profile of Porter-152, his first wife, Anna (White) lived to 1647, so he is not the one who married Margaret in 1606 in England. Would you please disconnect Porter-152 from her as a spouse?
