Biography

Nehemiah Potter was born April 13, 1739, in Coventry , Kent County, Rhode Island, a son of Job Potter. ^[1] Nehemiah is named in the Will of his father, Job, dated August 21,1766 and proven December 13, 1766 ^[2]

At the onset of the American Revolutionary War, Nehemiah enlisted as a Private in Captain Samuel Wall's company of the Rhode Island Militia. He advanced to Sergeant, under the command of Colonel Archibald Kasson and Colonel Waterman. Nehemiah is honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A091736. Descendants of this family are eligible to join the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. ^[3]

Nehemiah was twice married. His first wife was Eunice Casey, born July 7, 1745, in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island, a daughter of Edward Casey and Hannah Bowen. ^[4] Eunice died in 1791, ^[5] and Nehemiah married secondly, Rhoda Castel (1762-1834) ^[6]

Nehemiah Potter is found on the First Census of the United States, released in 1790 from tax records of 1783. He is residing in Scituate, Providence, Rhode Island. ^[7]

Nehemiah died August 5, 1809 and is buried in the Nehemiah Potter Lot in Scituate, Providence County Rhode Island. ^[8]
