James Stewart Pozzi was born about 1831 in Elgin Burgh, Moray, Scotland. [1][2] He was a tailor by 1851 and lived with his parents at least to 1861, when he employed a man and a boy. [3][4]
James married Jessie Paterson on 24 October 1862 at 30 South College Street, Elgin. [5][6] They lived at 40 High Street, Elgin. [7][8] James was an elder in the United Presbyterian Church. [9] In 1883 a presentation was made to honour him for his valuable services to the church. [10] He became the keeper of the medieval Elgin Cathedral in September 1883 and lived in the cathedral lodge.[11][12][13][14] The next year he took over the duties of the grave digger as well. [15]
James died 11 April 1912 at his home in Elgin and was buried in Elgin Cathedral Cemetery, a special honour since burials there had stopped. [16] His gravestone is a sandstone flat table which has become weathered and very difficult to read. The most recent engraving on the stone is of his wife Jessie. The grave at Elgin Cathedral is inscribed:
"In memory of William Stuart who died 15 September 1819 aged ... and Margaret Brown his spouse who died 3 December 1829 aged 71, and their son William who died aged 6, and their son-in-law Joseph Pozzi, jeweller who died 24 December 1871 aged 83. His wife Eliza Stuart who died 11 December 1881 aged 80. Also James Stuart Pozzi, keeper of Elgin Cathedral, who died 8 April 1912 aged 80 and his wife Jessie Paterson who died 11 February 1914 aged 82."
