Biography

Jacob Pratt, son of Abraham Pratt is a difficult study. His family, including his wife Mary Baldwin, is detailed in the Kenneth Charles Pratt book, "Abraham ... The Father Of Us All.[1] I've searched the Washington County, New York deed indexes and there are only two deeds listed for Jacob Pratt as a grantor and none as a grantee (checked through 1874).[2] Jacob is one of the executors of the estate of Asa Hoag and is listed as "of Easton". Jacob Pratt of Easton, Washington County, New York IS NOT the Jacob Pratt, son of Abraham Pratt.

It appears that Jacob Pratt migrated to Otsego County prior to 1801, when he can be found purchasing land. His brother-in-law, Elihu Ward is one of the witnesses to this land transaction. Jacob is always listed as a carpenter and living in the town of Otego. I suspect that his line becomes extinct. It appears that only one child, Sydney, lives to adulthood and he seems to not had any children. If you know differently, PLEASE update this profile.

The 1800 Federal Census for Elihu Ward in Otsego has an extra male in the right age bracket to be Jacob Pratt. I suspect that Jacob must have accompanied his sister and brother-in-law to Otsego County.

27 Aug 1801 - Jacob Pratt, a carpenter, buys property of Thomas Cartwright for $300 in the town of Otego.[3] His brother-in-law, Elihu Ward is one of the witnesses to the transaction.

5 May 1805 - Jacob Pratt, a carpenter, sells property to his nephew, David Ward.[4]

25 Jun 1810 - Jacob Pratt, a carpenter, buys a parcel of land from David Ward. It appears to be the property he sold to his nephew in 1805.[5]

Jacob Pratt can be found in the 1810 Federal Census indexed as J Peatt in Otsego County.[6] Note: There is also a J Pratt living in the town of Middlefield which does not match Jacob's known household.

11 Dec 1819 - Jacob Pratt, a carpenter, sells a parcel of land to Asa Thayer. David Ward is a witness to the transaction.[7]

Neither of the above deeds mention that Jacob is married.

The Jacob Pratt found in the 1820 Federal Census for Otsego County, New York is a good fit for what we know about "our" Jacob Pratt.[8] He has three young males and one young female living in the household which would represent his four known children. There is also two additional adult females living in his household, too.

I have been unable to locate Jacob's household in the 1830 Federal Census. There is a Jacob Pratt living in Onondaga County, but his household does not match "our" Jacob Pratt.

By the 1840 Federal Census, Jacob's household has changed a but. He can still be found in Otsego County.[9] He has one additional male in the 30 to 40 age group which is most likely his son, Sydney. He also has three females, one in the 20 to 30 age group most likely would be his daughter, Serzepla.

I have been unable to locate Jacob Pratt in 1850 or 1860, either.

Jacob Pratt can be found in the 1865 New York State Census for Otsego County, New York.[10] He is listed as 88 and is living in the household of his son Sydney Pratt. Sydney's age of 35 is incorrect. Other census records place his date of birth closer to 1810.
