Goals
This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.
One purpose of the Freeman Name Study is to trace the origin of the Freeman name, emigrants to, and early settlers in America. Another purpose is to have one place where people can easily view Freemans who belong to the same Freeman line or help connect Freeman lines that do not seem connected.
Feel free to add your Freeman family line or anything you feel will enhance people's knowledge of the Freeman name, including any sources on Freeman Genealogy.
If you have any questions, comments or ideas, feel free to leave a message or contact the profile manger of the Freeman Name Study, Lynn Hemrick.

Lynn Hemrick Freeman is my mother's maiden name and is one of my most frustrating brick walls. I'm hoping that through collaboration with other Freeman seekers, this wall can be shattered.
John Morgan Annie Freeman, my gg-grandmother's ancestors have been behind a brick wall for 37 years now. Would really like to see this wall come down, but so far haven't even had any clues.
Carolyn Martin Freeman is my paternal grandmother's line through her father, Milton Freeman. I have only gotten back to her great grandfather, Johnson Freeman, born in Georgia in 1796. Also have some dead ends on Milton's 2 wives. (see below under brick walls)
Meghan Freeman Freeman is my maiden name. I can only get back to my 2x great grandfather George Freeman before I hit my brick wall. Being a Freeman I'd like to help where I can and connect with other Freemans, although my knowledge of my Freeman heritage is solely in England and Canada at this point.
Keith Douglas Cook - Abigail (Freeman) Rich whom I'm 10 degree's from and lived in Massachusetts. I don't have much info on her but hopefully I can find some and possibly help out anybody else while expanding her profile.
Jo McCaleb - Descendant of Stephen Hopkins through Mary Snow, Elisa Freeman, Jr. his son, Henry Freeman and his children. From Massachusetts, this family line moved to Canada, returned to New York and then moved into Ohio and Wisconsin.

Origins and Meaning of the Freeman Name
The surname Freeman origins are found in England and Ireland. In the English Middle Ages, there were two types of peasants: Serfs and freemen. Serfs could only leave the land with the permission of their lord, but freemen were free to come and go as they pleased. A serf could become a freeman if he escaped for a year and a day without being caught. [The Middle Ages] Freeman is a term which originated in 12th-century Europe and was common as an American Colonial expression in Puritan times. ... Being a freeman carried with it the right to vote, and only freemen could vote in Plymouth by 1632. [[1]]
In Ireland, the name Freeman is derived from the native Gaelic Mac an tSaoir Sept, taken from the word 'saor' meaning 'craftsman'.
Freeman Brick Walls
- Freeman Walls
- Robert S. Freeman was born in 1828 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. I can find no information about his parents or siblings. Any assistance appreciated.
- Compact Trees
- Johnson Freeman born in Georgia about 1796. He Married Ester Traywick in Clarke County, Georgia, 17 June 1819. I would like to determine with proof who his parents were, his date of birth, and date of death. Update: Narrowed down his death date to before June 23, 1882 based on newspaper legal article regarding his estate!
- Milton Freeman had two wives. I want to know where in Texas his first wife died, were they were living in Texas, and when he left. Brick wall solved!!! Found a death notice her mother put in her hometown paper in Georgia stating she died in Strawn, Palo Pinto, Texas!!! His second wife is still a bit of a mystery. Would like proof of her name as records vary, when and where they met, anything about her really.
- George E Freeman was born about 1843 in London England. I have the name of his wife but have a brick wall for both. Would love some help getting beyond this point.
Notable Freemans
- Edmund Freeman Jr migrated to New England from Sussex England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640). He was one of nine founders of the town, Sandwich, Massachusets in 1637 and he served as the assistant to Governor Bradford from 1640 to 1647.

My 4th great grandfather was [Freeman-19768|Robert Freeman] of Louisa Co. VA who died in Barren Co. KY about 1820. His father, well there appear to be several candidates. I am looking for help on how to research Goochland and Louisa Counties pre-1780. AND I need help with a big mystery (at least to me) What is: "Van der Werf-Thompson Family: Freeman History"? I see people on FS cite it but I don't know what it means.
Warren county My great-great grandmother was Mattie Clay Freeman. She married her First Cousin Sidney Wright. The moved to Louisville Kentucky, date unknown. I'm new at this and i may need some guidance.

I'm pretty sure my family descends from Henry Freeman (via his son Isaac and grandson William) but all that the Freeman genealogy says about William is that he moved to Canada. I'm trying to prove that he is the William Freeman (1760-1816) that is buried in the Bowman United Church Cemetery located near Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. His wife Sarah Clawson is also buried there. My second "wall" is proving he is the father of my 4x great grandmother Sarah Smith (nee Freeman) who is buried in the same cemetery. If any of these names sound familiar to you (or anyone on this discussion board) I would love to talk to you.
Take care, Jennifer
