Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1812 near Salem in Harrison County, Virginia (to become West Virginia in 1863). She was the daughter of Jonathan Fitz Randolph and Mary Elizabeth Davis. She grew up on the family farm near Salem and in 1831 at the age of 18, she married Hugh Tate. The couple settled to farm in Harrison County in the area that would become part of Doddridge County when it was formed in 1845. They had eleven children together. Her husband Hugh died from an accident in early 1878 that Elizabeth apparently died from later the same year. Elizabeth is buried in the Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia.

Surname Note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy[1] assumes this to be the case when listing the children in the family in which Elizabeth is a child. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents.)
