Biography

Agnes was born about 1400,[1] the name of her father, Edmund of Canterbury, appears on her tombstone located at Bedgebury Chapel of St. Mary's Church, Goudhurst.[2] Agnes married (first) John Bedgebury (son of John de Bedgebury) who died in 1424.[3] There were no known children from this marriage.

She married (second) Walter Culpeper. That Walter was her second husband is evidenced by an undated Chancery proceeding in which "Walter Coulpepir and Agneis, his wife, late the wife of John, son of John de Beggebury," and Thomas Chaundeler, chaplain, appeared as plaintiffs in a dispute relating to property in Goudhurst.[4] There were five children from this marriage:

  1. John Colepeper b. 1430; m. Agnes Gainsford;; d. 22 Dec 1480[4]
  2. Richard Culpepper b. 1435; m. Margaret Wakehurst; d. Oct 1516[4]
  3. Nicholas Culpeper b. 1437; m. Elizabeth Wakehurst; d. 23 May 1510[4]
  4. Margaret Culpepper b. 1439; m. Alexander Clifford; d. 1488[4]
  5. Elizabeth Culpepper b. 1441; m. John Hardes[4]

Death

Agnes Culpepper died 2 December 1457 and was buried the following day in St Mary the Virgin's churchyard at Goudhurst, Kent, England.[5][6] Her husband Walter died 24 November 1462 and was also buried at Goudhurst.[4]

In the Visitation of Kent 1619 (Harleian Soc.) pages 81-83 the Roper pedigree shows that Agnes (Agnes vx' Walteri Colepeper de Bedgebery in co' Cantij ar) is the daughter of Rodolphus Roper and Beatrix Lewknor. Is the pedigree incorrect?

Either that, or her tombstone is wrong!

If she was "late the wife of John" Bedgebury, who died in 1424, she must have married Walter in/(after) 1424, not in 1411. Note their first child was born in 1424. In 1411 she would have been 21 and Walter approximately 13, a highly unlikely scenario for a marriage date.
