Biography

George was born the son of a career Navy man. He started out life in Corpus Christi, Texas, a small city on the Gulf Coast. He moved back and forth between the two coasts every two or three years between Corpus Christi and Kingsville, Texas, and San Diego and Alameda, California. He graduated High School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii in 1969. George went back to Corpus Christi to attend Del Mar College, living with his grandparents, rather than accompany the family to Whidbey Island, Washington. His draft number being low and his academic performance less than stellar, George rejoined the family in Washington and started talking to military recruiters.

George enlisted in the US Navy in 1970, reporting for recruit training in San Diego, California, in January 1971. He was further trained as an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator (AW) and served as an acoustic sensor operator on P-3A, P-3B, and P-3C aircraft in Patrol Squadron Four (VP-4) at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii (1972-1975), and in VP-40 flying out of NAS Moffett Field, California (1978-1981). He often deployed or operated at overseas sites including NAS Cubi Pt., Republic of the Philippines; Cam Rahn Bay, Republic of Vietnam; NAS Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territories; Bandar Abbas, Iran; Djibouti, Djibouti; Tainan and Taipei, Republic of China (Taiwan); Kadena AB and NAS Misawa, Japan; NAS Adak, Alaska; NAS Agana, Guam; and other Pacific and Indian Ocean airfields conducting antisubmarine warfare (ASW) sorties and other combat and non-combat missions. The Vietnam War ended about the time he left VP-4.

George taught acoustic analysis at a California Navy training facility from 1975-1978. Leaving squadron life behind, George moved into planning and controlling P-3 operations by living and working at two ASW Operations Centers (ASWOCs) at Lajes Field AB, Azores, Portugal (1981-1984), and at NAS Keflavik, Iceland (1987-1989), with a tour of duty as a Navy Recruiter in Waco, Texas, in between the two overseas tours. Leaving Iceland with his family in 1989, George was the logistics manager for the Navy Sonobuoy Program at Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane, Indiana, until his retirement as a Master Chief AW in 1991.

After retirement from the Navy, George served as a GS-13 federal civil servant at NSWC Crane until 2007 when he left federal civil service with his friend Scott Montgomery to open Applied Logistics Services (ALS), Incorporated, a defense contracting small business. At one point the Odon, Indiana, company had 94 employees. Selling ALS to a Washington D.C. based company in 2017, George fully retired in 2018.

A member of the Free and Accepted Masons (Freemasons), George was Master of Bloomfield Lodge #84 F&AM, Bloomfield, Indiana, in 1998. George enjoys family life, reading, genealogy, and bass fishing.
