Research Notes

John Ellis was born in 1661. He first appears in the records in Henrico, Virginia on 1 Oct 1683. He married Susannah. They settled on Peters' Creek, a branch of Tuckahoe Creek in Henrico County, Virginia. Their known children are:

John, m. Elizabeth Ware

William, had 4 sons and 4 daughters. Lived to be 83 yrs old.

Thomas, m. Anne (unknown); had 3 sons, 3 daughters

NOTE -A great-grandson of John Ellis's stated Thomas Ellis married Elizabeth Patterson. See "Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia" by Bishop Meade Volumne 2, page 460 printed in Philadelphia by Joseph Lyon Miller, Effie Shelton Campbell 1912, BUT that has been proved to be incorrect as Thomas Ellis's will was dated 16 September 1771 and it was probated in March 1776 states 'Anne' was his wife.. The Douglas Register on page 337 shows that the funeral service for Thomas Ellis was held on the 28 Oct 1775, yet the Thomas Ellis who married Elizabeth Patterson had two daughters: Sally Ellis born the 22 July 1777 and Suckie Ellis born 27 Dec 1786 who were born after the death date of his father Thomas Ellis. Neither of these two daughters are named in Thomas Ellis's 1771 will probated in 1776.

Joseph, m. Elizabeth Perkins; will dated 11 Jun 1785, proved 7 Jan 1793.

Mary, m. John Smith who owned the farm called "Strawberry Hill".

Charles, b. 1719; m. Susannah Harding, dau. of Thomas and Mary (Giles) Harding; moved to Amherst, Abermarle, Virginia; d. 4 May 1759.

*Note it is possible the first 3 sons were by a first wife.

The will of John Ellis, written 11 Oct 1728, presented in court by Thomas and William Ellis and proved Dec 1728. Wife's name is not mentioned in the published abstract. His children's DOBs are estimated based on information in this will and the information provided by Thomas Harding Ellis as listed in Bishop Meade's "Old Families and Churches" p 461.

To son John, plantation and land binding on John Stewart and 100 acres on lower south side South branch, and next to Capt. Richard Randolph's land.

To son Thomas, 140 acres next to Capt. Richard Randolph.

To son James, 140 acres joining Thomas.

To son Henry, passel of land between sons John and James.

To son William, 150 acres next to son John.

To son Charles, 100 acres next to William and to Capt. Richard Randolph on Tuckahoe Creek.

The remainder of land to my son Joseph.

To daughter Mary, two leather trunks and contents

All of estate left with sons William and Thomas and my three little sons Henry, Charles and Joseph to live with them until 21.
