Biography

Jemima was a Friend (Quaker)

Jemima was the wife of Elias Hicks, the prominent Quaker, abolitionist, and namesake of the Hicksite branch of Quakerism.

Jemima and Elias first announced their intention to marry to the Westbury Monthly Meeting the 29th day 11 month 1770/71 (January 29, 1771).

Elias Hicks son of John Hicks, of Rockaway, and Jemima Seamn, daughter of Jonathan Seaman of Jericho, presented themselves and declared their intentions of marriage with each, and this meeting appoints John Mott and Micajah Mott to make enquiry into Elias Hicks, his clearness in relation of marriage with other women, and to make report at the next monthly meeting.

Their second announcement was recorded at the next meeting 26th day 12th month 1770/71 (February 26, 1771) with Robert Seaman and John Mott being appointed to attend the marriage.[1] Jemima and Elias were married before friends at the Westbury Meeting on 2nd day 1st month (2 March) 1771.[2] The marriage was reported as accomplished at the following meeting 30th day 1st month (March 30), 1771. [1]

They together had 11 children, only 5 of which survived to adulthood. She died 17d 3m 1829 [17 Mar 1829].[3] She is buried in the Jericho Friends' Burial Ground.[4]

Seaman-155 and Seamen-10 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate wives of Elias Hicks. Difference in month of birth due to the old style calendar where "month 9" = November.
