Lorah Standish[1] was born about 1660 in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, the daughter of Alexander and Sarah Alden Standish. She married Abraham Sampson, Jr. about 1680[2][3][4], also in Duxbury, and mothered seven children. The date of her death is not known, but as she was mentioned in her husband's will, we can assume that it followed the date of its writing, 2 August 1725.[5][6]
All of the dates in her life are conjectural. The consensus opinion is to infer the date of marriage from the 1682 birth date of the first child and then to infer the date of birth from the date of marriage.[7][8]
Lorah's father, Alexander, married twice. His will, as amended by a near-death codicil, left almost nothing to the children of the first marriage. Abraham Sampson, in behalf of himself, Lorah, and three other daughters with their husbands, contested the will stating that Alexander had promised to remember his daughters in his will. The will was proved despite their protest. However, they succeeded in identifying a parcel of land that was not mentioned in the will. Because the land could not be divided practically, it was awarded to Lorah's brother, Miles Standish, with the requirement that he pay each of his sisters £10. [9]
In some sources, an alternate spelling of "Lora" is used.[10] Also, some records, as footnoted below, give her name as "Sarah".
↑ Wood, entry for 6. Abraham Sampson II, notes that the original record gives her name as "Sarah" but that someone subsequently corrected it to say "Lorah".
↑ Mass. Vital Records, Littleton, p 515, gives her name as "Sarah".
