Biography

Notables Project
William Stead is Notable.

William was born in 1849.

He was a journalist for the Pall Mall Gazette. His sensational exposé of the commercial trade in virgins led to the raising of the age of consent from 13 to 16. He married Emma Lucy Wilson in 1873[1], and they had six children.

He was travelling on the Titanic to take part in a peace congress at Carnegie Hall on 21 April at the request of William Howard Taft.

Although his cabin was C-87, while the ship was sinking he was quietly reading a book in the First Class Smoking Room. He later helped several women and children into the lifeboats and gave his life jacket to another passenger. His body was not recovered.
