Note

This profile was never completely cleaned up after several merges. Somehow during the merges, he was given the first name "Samuel," but no known documents regarding him contain any other name than "Peter" or "Peter Jr." Perhaps he had become confused with a Samuel Stephens who served in the Revolutionary War.

Stevens-2789 and Stephens-1578 do not represent the same person because: Very little information, nothing in common

What record gives his first name as Samuel? How did that name get attached to Peter Stephens Jr? Someone needs to explain this.
posted by Daniel Bly
Samuel is his first name according to Find-a-Grave and at least 6 other Ancestry trees. Marriage and some other legal records only show as "Peter Stephens".

You are right Harvey, I have done a lot of research on this family and the only documents I have ever seen give his name as "Peter Stephens," with no other first or middle name. Some years back some folks began tampering with the FindAGrave records of the Peter Stephens family of Frederick County, Virginia. The made changes in dates, added memorials for people who did not exist and created a real nightmare for the family genealogists and historians. Such a shame because now some of this is being copied to other sites.
