Biography

Birth and Parents

Walter Strickland, Knt., was the son and heir of Walter Strickland, K.B., and Elizabeth Pennington.[1][2][3] Walter was said to be aged 15 in 1505 and aged 28 in 1518/9, pointing to a date of birth about 1490.[4] His father held lands at Sizergh, Westmorland, which Walter eventually inherited,[1] and it is at Sizergh where Walter was probably born.

Life

Walter's father left a will dated 1502, but no inquest was held after his death. Walter, still a minor at his father's death, should have been a ward of the king and should have sought livery of his fathers lands when he came of age. Instead, his father's friends held the lands and gave Walter seisin of them without following proper form.[4]
Walter was named in the 1516 will of his uncle, Thomas Strickland, clerk.[1][5]
In 1518/9, Walter (aged about 28) asked for pardon of all errors and neglect in homage and for licence to renewal of all the manors his father was seized of at his death,[6] paying 42 shillings and eightpence.[4]

Marriages and Children

Walter married first to Agnes Redman, daughter of Richard Redman.[1][6] Walter was a young child when he was betrothed to Agnes in covenants dated 16 April 1498 between his father on one part and John Preston, Esq., and Ellen, late wife of Richard Redman of Thornton on the other. They agreed that "Walter, son and heir apparent of Walter Strickland, Esq., shall within ten years after the date of these covenants, take to wife Annes, daughter of Richard Redman".[4] There were no children from this marriage.[1][6]
Walter married second to Katherine Neville, daughter and co-heiress of Ralph Neville, Esq., of Thornton Bridge, Yorkshire, and his wife Anne Warde.[1][6][7] The couple married about 1515.[8] They had two sons and three daughters:

Death

In an indenture dated 26 April 1526, Walter contracted with a physician, Alexander Kenet,[13] to cure him of his asthma. The contract stated that the doctor would bring Walter "to perfect health of all his infirmaties and diseases contained in his person, and especially stomach, and lungs, and breast, wherein he has most disease and grief" and states that the doctor would not depart from Sir Walter without license until Walter "be perfect heal".[4][6]
Sir Walter Strickland died 9 January 1528.[1][6][14]
Walter's Inquisition Post Mortem on 5 April 1530 gives a full account of his will and his date of death. His will requested burial in the church of the Holy Trinity of Kendall "in myn owne choir of Sent Katryn". It also names the following family members: "dame Elysabeth my mother, now wife of Sir William Gascon"; daughters Elizabeth, Anne and Mary; son Thomas; his wife Katherine; "Jarves Strikland my unchill" and his wife Elizabeth; and "my enterly welbeloved Walter Strekland, my sone & myn heire". His wife, son Walter, Gervais Strickland and Sir Richard Browne, clerke, were to be executors and supervisors were to be his mother and William Dacre. His son and heir Walter was aged 14.[13]
His widow remarried three more times: in 1529 to Henry Burgh, Esq.; about 1531 to ____ Darcy, with whom she had a daughter; and last, about 1533, to William Kynvet, Esq. [1][8]

Research Notes

Daughter Agnes

In Magna Carta Ancestry, Richardson calls Agnes Strickland the daughter of this Walter Strickland and his second wife, Katherine Neville. He states that Agnes married first to Henry Frowick, Esq. and second to Thomas Curwen, Knt.;[2] however, he does not attribute these parents to Agnes in Royal Ancestry, which was published two years later.[1] Agnes was actually the sister of the Walter of this profile, not his daughter.[9] Agnes' parents are also reported incorrectly in Scott's Stricklands of Sizergh Castle (1908); by Nicolson and Burns in History and Antiquities;[4][6] and in Burke's Commoners (vol. 1 page 57), etc.
