Biography

"William Strode was born in 1589 at Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, the son of William Strode and Elizabeth Upton, daughter of Jeffery Upton.[1][2]

He married around 1621 Joan (or Joanne) Barnard, daughter of Edward Barnard of Downside, Somerset.[1]

  • Edward Strode (born 22 Aug 1623, died young)[1]
  • William Strode[1] (born about 1625)[3] also served as MP for Ilchester (1679) and from 1680 gave his support to the Duke of Monmouth.
  • Edward Strode[1] (baptised 02 Apr 1629 Shepton Mallett)[4] built the Merchant's House, Shepton Mallet, and similarly courted grief by supporting the Duke of Monmouth

Career

He was a Member of Parliament for Ilchester, Somerset in the Long Parliament (the Star Chamber); he was elected in a by-election in 1645.

"Sir William Strode; M. P. b. 1589; d. 1666; M. Joan Barnett (Barnard). He was of Barrington and London. Issue: William; John; Edward; Essex; Barnet (Barnard); George.[6]

William purchased Barrington Court from the Clifton family in 1625. Overmantle created at Barrington Court to celebrate wedding of William Strode and Joan Barnard. He acquired Martock Manor in 1637 from Henry Stanley .... continued in the family till 20 June 1728 when it was sold to Zachary Bayley[7]

Death

He was buried at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Barrington, Somerset, on 20 December 1666.[1]

Will

Will dated 10 June 1665, proved (P.C.C. 2 Carr) 22 January 1666/1667.[1]

Summarised as follows:[8]

" I WILLIAM STRODE of Barrington in the county of Somersett - esquire." To my son Edward Strode " my sword with the silver & Gold hilt And my case of Pistolls with the Crimson Velvett Holsters." To my son John Strode the Rectory of Sutton and my land in Ireland. To my son Essex Strode £1500 and half Bourn's farm in Hewish, co. Somerset. To my son Barnard Strode £1500, half Bourn's farm and land in Martock and all my Latin and Spanish books. To my daughter Wyndham coach and two horses and my picture. To my daughter Howe a bed and chairs. To my daughter Joan Strode £2500 and several Jewells which were her good mother's. To my cousin Thomas Smythes of London, goldsmith, £10 yearly. My sons Edward and John to hold my manors of Martock, Glaston and Edgarly for 21 years unless my son William give good security for paying above legacies. To my son and daughter Howe for their daughter Dorothy Howe £200 if their mother my sister Dorothy Howe give £200 for same purpose. To my servant and nephew George Bisse £100. Residue to my son William my executor. Overseers : Sons John and Edward Strode. Witnesses : Jo : Strode, Geo : Bisse, James Wyatt, Edmund Butt. Dated 10 June 1665.

Monumental Brass to his Wife Joan

A brass plaque at Shepton Mallett indicates that at her death in 1649 she was in her 42nd year.[9][10] The inscriptions refer to sons William, Edward, John, George, Essex and Barnard, and daughters Jane, Elizabeth and Joanna.

Her arms are depicted as I and IV Barnard and II and III Smythes (see p 83). Arms of Smythes: Argent a chevron azure between three oak leaves slipped vert.

He left a will dated 10 June 1665, with Codicil dated 1 Nov 1666, proved at the PCC on 22 Jan 1666/7 - it's contents (summarised) would be an interesting addition to the Biography perhaps.

There were two William Strode's. One was a member of Parliament, the other, Col. William I believe was not. The Strodes he was related to were clothiers from Shepton Mallet, Somerset,

according to McMurtry's book.
