Martha Swanson was born about 1764 in Bedford County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Swanson, Sr. and Mary McGuire.
Martha married Gatewood Dunn in Henry County, Virginia in 1785. Shortly thereafter, Gatewood and Martha relocated to Georgia, with her parents and several of her siblings.
Martha's father wrote his will in March 1802 but did not mention Martha as she had already passed away. However, the will did mention Sally and Polley Dunn, assumed to be daughters of Martha and Gatewood.
