John, my great great grandfather was also named John Tangney. He was born July 13, 1824 in Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland. He emigrated to the US and arrived in Baltimore on Dec 2, 1847. He passed away on March 3, 1880 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Don’t know if he is in your line. I have a little bit more on him that I’d be happy to share if it would help you.

Good luck, Terry

Thanks for contacting me, Terry. My great grandfather was Patrick D (Denis?) Tangney, b 1836. I know very little about him, except that he was from Listry, which is on the Killarney-Milltown road.

I do know the Castleisland Tangneys, but only obliquely on a social level; we're not related afaik.

Bon chance! --johnt

Hey Greta! Thanks for the welcome :-)

I do have a question... Are living people "private" by default? Specifically, I just uploaded a GEDCOM that contains my kids, sibs, cousins, etc. Will those people be visible outside of WikiTree? To WikiTree members? My privacy setting is "Private with Public Biography and Family Tree".

Thanks! --johnt

Hi John! :) Yes, all living people are unlisted profiles by default unless they join WikiTree then they can choose to still be unlisted, private, public, etc. The only person that can see your unlisted profiles is you.

Greta, I have another question. After my GEDCOM was uploaded, I started going through it to see who is already present in WikiTree. Most of the people in my GEDCOM are not — I think? I mean they did not have a "compare" button. But what does the little checkbox at the left of each row mean? The tool-tip says "You can check this box if you do not plan to do anything more with this individual." I don't know what that means. Does that mean that that person will NOT be added to WikiTree?

Similarly, some of the people in my GEDCOM already existed and after I did the "compare" dance, most of them were correctly matched. That means, I assume, that my data will not be added, because that person already exists in WikiTree?

Thanks! --johnt
