As his name indicates, Storm Vanderzee was born during a storm on the sea voyage to New Netherland.[1]
Leaving in early October, bad weather slowed the voyage of the Rensselaerwyck and "log of the ship contains under the date of Sunday, 2 November 1636, the following entry: "Drifted 16 leagues N.E. by E.; the wind about west, the latitude by dead reconing 41 degrees, 50 min. with very high seas. That daythe overhang above our rudder was knocked in by severe storm. This day a child was born on the ship, and named and bap-
tized in England stoerm; the mother is annetie baernts. This day gone." [2]
After a stop for supplies at Ilfracombe, county Devon, England they went on - pulling into the New Netherlands on 4 March 1637 - the river was still iced up so they did not get up to Rensselaerwyck until April 8 having spent six months on board. [2]
His family settled at Normanskill near Beverwyck, and he engaged in trading lumber, furs and tobacco. He married Hilletie Lansing, owned a house and lot in Beverwyck, and later opened a tavern in Albany. In February 1679 he and Hilletie filed a will and Storm died by some time in May.[3]
In 1656, Storm was delivering planks to Manhattan. By 1658 he was in business for himself, or as a partner of his father, as can be inferred from the fact that he was taking debtors to court, and was in turn sued by an employee for wages. The records of one of his Manhattan business deals survives: he purchased 486# of tobacco from Allard ANTHONY, but for more than eight months neglected to pay the price of 243 boards. finally, ANTHONY had him arrested and imprisoned, which was inspiration enough: Storm mortgaged a warehouse and lot in New Amsterdam to pay the debt. Although the warehouse is called Storm's in the court record, the description of its location shows it to have been his father's, strengthening the impression that they had a partnership.
Storm had several business dealings with his brother-in-law Roeloff SWARTWOUT. In 1662 Roeloff paid a creditor with wheat of Storm's, repaying Storm with a lot in Beverwyck. Roeloff settled another debt by selling his wife's inheritance to Storm, who used her share and his own in paying for merchandise imported from Amsterdam.
Storm and his father Albert Andriesen Bradt were included in those to attend the funeral of Jeremiah van Rensselaer in 1774[4] inclusion on this list was sign you were known by the community at Rensselaerwyck and served as a sort of census substitute for early settlers in that area.
On 24-Feb-1679, Storm and Hilletie van der ZEE filed a joint will, and Storm was sick. Besides the usual financial provisions, there was a statement that the survivor should see that the children were taught reading, writing, and an honorable handicraft. By 6-May Storm was dead, for on that date Harme RUTGERS sought a replacement for him as coadministrator of Hendrick WILLEMSEN's estate.
Storm kept a tavern for years, a combination bar/eating place which was used for social and even business activities.
