Biography

At birth a bed was made for me in a file cabinet drawer because there were so many births in the dispensary that day. I entered the world of family history when a child about 6 or 7 years old when my Mom and Dad started helping me and my siblings memorize the names of both sets of grandparents. Their were names were different, more old fashioned then any I already knew. I had spent a lot of time at my Grandma & Grandpa old fashioned house even younger, and loved the items in their home. At about 10 or 11 my Dad taught a class at our Church about how to fill out a Pedigree Chart and Family Group Record sheet. After a time as an adult I got more involved during the floppy disk computer days. I’m slow at the computer the biggest file drawer ever, but have an appreciation for the ability to do more for my research. I love learning about my ancestors and the history and context of their lives as I’m able to, and helping others as I can with theirs.

Ellen my ancestors were Slaveholders. I’m not black, except Dr. Martin Luther King is a distant cousin. Do you know if it’s still appropriate for me to use the Black Heritage tab?

It is perfectly OK to follow tags that interest you. Many descendants of slaveholders are active in Black Heritage here, including working to identify the people that their ancestors enslaved, in order to help with their genealogy.

Yes, I’m trying to share my Slaveholding ancestors and the slaves I know of. Hoping to also find those they enslaved in hopes their descendants can find them.

I see you have connected to some profiles I created that are distant relations to me and are your direct ancestors, so will be glad to add you as the profile manager for them. On the right side of Anna (Rice) Powell (1802-aft.1850) is a connections section and in the first item listed is an option to request to be added to the Trusted List for that profile. Feel free to do that for any of your ancestor's profiles that I have added. The profiles are Open so you can edit anything you like in them without being the PM though, if you are fine with the current status.
