Biography

Benjamin Woodbridge was the son of John Woodbridge and Mercy Dudley Woodbridge. [1]

Benjamin was invited in 1667 to preach in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut. Unfortunately, the selection was made by a minority of the members. He was ordained at the church on March 18, 1669/70 but many of the dissatisfied members left the church. [2]

He married Mary Ward on June 3, 1672 in Haverhill, Norfolk, Massachusetts. [3] [4] She was the daughter of Rev. John Ward, of Haverhill. They had four children while in Connecticut: Elizabeth, Benjamin (died young), Dudley and Benjamin. They remained in Windsor amid may problems until May of 1881 when they moved to Bristol, Rhode Island. [5]

He preached at Bristol, Rhode Island from 1681 to 1686. [2] One more son, Samuel, was born in Rhode Island. [6] Mary (Ward) Woodbridge died on October 11, 1665 [2] leaving Benjamin with four children between three and thirteen years of age. He married Deborah Tarleton in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay on 31 August 1686. [7] [2] Deborah was the daughter of Daniel and Lydia Cushing of Hingham and the widow of Henry Tarleton.

After leaving Rhode Island, Benjamin's family moved to Kittery, Maine where he also served as a preacher. From there they moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire by about 1691 and then to Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay in 1698 where he served as minister until his death about ten years later. [2] Benjamin signed a will on June 10, 1709 in Medford. [8]The will contained a statement, " I being called by the Governor and Council to go as a minister to the forces raised within this province on the present intended expedition to Canada. And not knowing how the province of God may order it with me for life or death. I do ordain this as my last will and testament." The will named Deborah Woodbridge to be his executor of his real and personal estate during her life. She was given the permission to sell property as needed. If she refused to be executor, then his "brother" (actually brother-in-law) Samuel Ruggles was to be executor. After the death of Deborah, the estate was to be equally divided between his living children: Elizabeth Odlen, Dudley Woodbridge, Benjamin Woodbridge, and Samuel Woodbridge. Also mentioned was that twenty pounds was to go the Deborah Cushing who " now lives with us". This Deborah was likely the niece of Deborah Woodbridge.

Benjamin died on January 15, 1709/1710 in Medford. [9] [2] His will was probated on February 13. Deborah had declined to be executrix and it was granted to Samuel Ruggles. [8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:

Woodbridge-143 and Woodbridge-19 appear to represent the same person because: I have found multiple sources that show both Mary Ward (who was the mother of all his children) and Deborah Cushing Tarleton (widow of Henry Tarleton) were married to Reverend Benjamin Woodbridge. I will add additional sources.

Without documentary evidence, Henry Jaques is said to have come to New England with young Benjamin Woodbridge, who, having entered Oxford at the age of sixteen in 1638, left the university, possibly in 1640, joined his brother John in Newbury in the Mass. Bay Colony and became the first graduate of Harvard College in 1644. The home of the Woodbridges was Stanton Fitzwarren in north Wiltshire, in which part of the county there also lived a family of Jaques...<ref>Walter Goodwin Davis, Massachusetts & Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis., CD-ROM (CD version published 1998 by Broderbund, Novato, CA: original version pub. by Genealogical Publishing Co, Baltimore, MD, 1996), Vol. 2:350</ref>
