Biography

Peter had five children according to the will he wrote in 1816. They were: John, Cuthbert "Cutty", William, Elizabeth and Mary.

According to information included in 'The Word Family in the Virginia Colony from Jamestown to Independence' self-published by Martha C. Word Haley in 2020, Peter was married twice. His first wife was Mary Unknown. This is verified by a deed dated 28 Feb 1780 in Lunenburg Virginia. The following is a transcription included: "At a Court held in Lunenburgh [sic] County the 8th day of June 1780 Peter Word acknowledged the within written deed and the memorandum of livery of Seizen [sic] hereon Idorsed which was ordered to be recorded. And Mary the wife of the said Peter being first examined, voluntarily relinquished her right of Dower in the Land Conveyed by the said Deed Teste Wm Sanifer [?] CS [?]"

Martha noted neither a purchase of this land nor a grant was found. Perhaps Mary inherited the land.

Per this same book, Peter and Mary married about 1778 or before. She died before 1782 in Lunenburg, leaving Peter with two young sons, John about age 4 and Cuthbert about age 2. This would indicate the other three children were born to Frances.

Peter died between when his will was written on 23 February 1816 and when the 1820 Census was taken. He was not found in the 1820 Census.

Notes

In the bio in the memorial at findagrave, an indication is made that Frances was the mother of Cuthbert; however, that is incorrect. As shown above by the deed, Mary, Peter's first wife was his mother.

Word-62 and Word-64 appear to represent the same person because: Charles and Sarah only had one son named Peter. His birth was about 1745. He was born between Thomas in 1743 and Cuthbert in 1748.

You have two sons named Peter listed for Charles & Sarah. This one, Word-64, has the correct info; however, the second, Word-62, has an incorrect birth date. I believe Word-62 should be merged into Word-64.
