Hello John, Fairly new member and I am still fumbling around trying to figure out how to best navigate through this site. I continue to be interested in my 3rd great grandfather, Robert Henry Bell, 1770 - 1842 who was a Lieutenant in the Royal Waggoneers, retired on half-pay in 1810 and was the captain of the newly formed Dublin Horse Police, Kevin Street Barracks 1816 - 1832. He was married twice. He married Rebecca Colley in Mitcham, Surrey in 1786. This may or may not have been his first marriage. Rebecca died in Dublin in 1821, shortly after giving birth to my 2nd great grandfather, Frederick H. Bell. Captain Robert Henry Bell married Rebecca Bowland of Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. After his retirement from the Dublin Horse Police they moved to Glenavy in Country Antrim where he built a large family home, Bellbrook, which was completed in 1835 and still stands today.

My concern is with a family story that says three sons were disinherited because they went off to sea. I suspect these sons may have been from a previous marriage where their natural mother died and left in the care of maternal grandparents. Anyone searching for their ancestry in the Mitcham Surrey area between 1790 and 1808 with a relative born to a Robert Henry Bell, who was a Lieutenant at that time, may well be related.

Lastly, because we do have some records of his military service in the Royal Waggoneers, is there a London-based genealogist, familiar with army records, that could be engaged, for a fee, to search those records that may lead to names of parents or place of birth?

I have done a great deal of research on this family but I have reached a stone-wall trying to move back to the next generation. I am a long-time member and user of Ancestry.com, but with assistance to trace our family tree further back in time. Steve Bell

Hi John,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

It's quite likely true. Bernard Burke's "A selection of arms authorized by the laws of heraldry" states that "Thomas, d. in the United States, having married, and had issue". This version of the family history was expanded in "A Genealogical History of the Eagar family" published in 1861, but I don'think that added any specifics.

Hello John Falvey

I believe that my husband, Bryan (né Catt) Belfont, is a descendant of this John Bolton.

Bryan > Gerald (né Bellfont) Catt > Kathleen Dora Bolton > Robert Henry Bolton (Surg Major, British army) > Robert Collis Bolton > John Justice Bolton (m Anne Collis) >…… and have not proven the next links; but you may have them. I also found the 1759 undertaking at the Irish Land Registry Office…. But I did not know of a 1718 one.

Perhaps we could correspond to find out where John Bolton was born and what the links down the generations to John Justice Bolton.

Hi John,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Jen,

I still do work for the county Kerry team on sourcing and connecting profiles.

In the areas I work on there isn't really much of a collective effort by the project. Maggie N. and I do curate the earlier profiles.

I don't think I would have the time to do anything on a project newsletter at the moment, genealogy is a winter activity for me. If anybody wants to find an Irish will I can probably tell them where they might be able to find it, if it still exists.

I don't use google group or discord as nobody else's interests overlapped that much with mine.

All the best

John

Hi John, looking for his wife's family on WikiTree. It says she was a daughter of David La Touche.

Maria La Touche, his first wife ("On the 5th of November 1801 Maurice married Maria La Touche (daughter of David La Touche) ; they had six sons and four daughters. Maria La Touche died in 1829. Secondly, Maurice married Cecilia Maria, widow of George Knight")

Any clues? Thanks

Hi Maggie, she's in Burke's Irish Family Records (1976) at https://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/thoms/burkes_irish_family_records_1976/burkes_irish_family_records_1976_pg0732.pdf

Her father was David of Marlay (WT profile La_Touche-23) and her mother Elizabeth Marlay - https://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/thoms/burkes_irish_family_records_1976/burkes_irish_family_records_1976_pg0731.pdf

Hi John ~ I have been trying to figure out if William Mahony married and had this daughter? I plan on removing them.

No sources. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mahony-474

Thanks (-:

I would remove them, someone on the Forum has already said the connection is unlikely.

My suspicion is that he never married. French and Belgian funeral records normally mention the spouse.

I removed him and believe you are right. am going to try looking in newspapers as in 1880's, there must be something on him. Thanks as always (-:

Hi John ~ I need your opinion on Elizabeth MacCarthy. Someone on Family Search Tree added a marriage to a Daniel Ryan and a ton of children in Pennsylvania (and Virginia) to her (no sources, of course).I removed them all and put her back in original position (in Ireland, never immigrated). In the meantime, our S.T.M. says she could have married a James De Courcy? What do you think?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacCarthy-122

When I get back from work today, I am going to add her brothers' wives and children.

Take Care (-:

Hi Maggie,

Tralee church records show a James Courcy marrying an Elizabeth McCarthy in 1780 - https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/2e551a0584571 She was from Cloherbrien north of Tralee, he was from Kilgarvan, see their marriage settlement - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSJW-K9QW-X?i=95&cat=185720

She was described as the spinster sister of Daniel McCarthy so it's possibly the right one. (I can't find Daniel's will listed but there is this "In the 95th year of his age, Mr. Daniel Justice Florence McCarthy, formerly Ardcanaght" 04 November 1830 - Cork Constitution

This James Courcy is mentioned in his father's will of 1776 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89LW-6JMF?i=523&cat=224404 This can be verified by looking at the deed on the previous page to the one above.

There's an interesting cast of supporting players in the deeds including the mysterious Eugene Mahony of Molahiffe - the only Mahony freeholder in Kerry, and David Tuohy whose daughter married Rickard O'Connell.

Happy hunting.

John, can you take a peek if you have a minute? Terribly short notice, I know. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/O'Connell-837

Oh just send me what you think should be in there......Thanks, Maggie

Hi Maggie, I can probably provide the missing sources in the morning. I think we need more on his career for people to understand why he was so important to the Irish.

Other more minor points is that he is generally known as "The Liberator" though "The Emancipator" is more accurate. As for "a once-wealthy Roman Catholic family, that had been dispossessed of its lands" under the "Grand Lease" of 1696 John Mahony sub-let six townlands back to Jeffery Connell of Tarmons in perpetuity so I'm not sure that the family did lose out.

That's interesting about the family sublets! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. I knew you would do a sterling job of it. Thanks so much!

We plan on featuring Daniel O' Connell alongside St. Patrick, the Example Profile of the Week in the Connection Finder on March 17th. Between now and then is a good time to take a look at the sources and biography to see if there are updates and improvements that need made, especially those that will bring it up to WikiTree Style Guide standards. We know it's short notice, so don't fret too much. Just do what you can. A Team member will check on the profile Tuesday and make changes as necessary.

Thank you for sending me suggestions for improving my Irish sourcing, along with a bunch of Irish sources I had no idea even existed. They are, for me, like bait placed at the entrance to the rabbit hole.

Hi John,

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams. We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland for details. The Teams are :-

1. Categories Team
2. Counties Team
3. Managed Profiles Team
4. Membership Team
5. Profile Improvement Team
6. Topics Team
7. Diaspora

? Can you let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project and which team(s) you’d like to join. Please also let me know your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group or confirm you are already a member of the google group.

Many thanks,

Many thanks for your assistance with my Dillon/Dillane problem. I will now assume all my efforts with Linch should focus on Lynch. The places Tralee, Lixnaw, Listowel, Tieraclea and Tournageehy all being in Kerry will really help the search.
