Biography

I was born in 1939 in England of Canadian parents. My father’s mother Mabel Morley immigrated from London to Vancouver. My father later went to England for employment opportunity and brought my mother there for their wedding in 1938. When World War II broke out they returned with me to Vancouver the following year. I n 1947 when I was 8 we immigrated to San Francisco where my father became a furniture salesman. So I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, attending Sequoia High School in Redwood City and graduating from University of California Berkeley in 1961. My ancestry on my dad’s side is English and Maltese. My grandfather Vincent Mifsud immigrated from Malta to Canada age 23 and married Mabel Morley in Vancouver where my dad was born. My grandfather was quite well educated, literate in three languages. He spent his work years as a clerk with the Canadian Pacific Railway, served in the Canadian Army in World War I, and died at age 100. On my mother’s side I am Scottish Irish, and English with some French history. My mother’s father William Roach was an engineer pattern maker born in Bow London who married my grandmother Annie Stewart in Saskatchewan where she was in his employ as a stenographer. William Roach’s mother was Elizabeth Doree whose family of Huguenot silk weavers left France to settle in London in the 1600’s. My grandmother Annie Stewart’s father was Donald Stewart’ a rancher and stockbreeder born in Ontario of Scottish parents. Her mother Mary Booth was also born in Ontario, of Irish descent. In San Francisco in the 1940’s my parents enjoyed a wide range of interests. As an only child I participated with them in the many opportunities in the arts, music and travel available in a widening locale. We developed a varied new circle of friends and my father continued to build his stamp collection of British North America which he was later invited to exhibit at the EXPO World’s Fair in Vancouver in 1986. From an early age I loved to travel and majored in language at UC Berkeley. After graduation I took a civilian GS5 job with the U S Army in Korea and worked in the Service Club system at 7th Infantry Division Camp Casey. There I met my husband army officer Lt Richard White, and we married in California in 1964. We lived in Los Angeles where he started some college but then made a decision to volunteer for combat in Viet Nam. Following this tour of duty there he was awarded a silver star. He was raised in an army family and made it his career. We were stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky, Fort Polk Louisiana, Eglin Air Force Base Florida, Fort Benning Georgia and Schofield Barracks for five years in Hawaii before returning to California. Previously when we lived in Los Angeles I was hired by the county as a social case worker at the Bureau of Public Assistance downtown. It was the only fairly well paying job I could find available at the time. Actually I had no idea what the job title entailed. However I soon became fascinated by the welfare system and the families it served, and found my calling there. It was a unique experience in terms of timing as the first of the Watts riots broke out there the following summer of 1965. I remember getting ready in the morning and my husband telling me I couldn’t go to work that day. I turned ion the TV and saw the troops and fires at my workplace. We were off work for one day and returned with of course many new challenges giving new meaning to my future career choice. Just before my husband left for Viet Nam our first daughter was born in Los Angeles. After he returned our next duty station was Eglin Air Force Base where he was an instructor at the Army Ranger Camp where we lived. Our second daughter was born there in Florida before we left for Hawaii. When the girls got older I wanted to work again but the job market there was limited, especially for military dependents. I ended up taking some courses at the University of Hawaii in preparation for a master’s degree at San Jose State University when we returned to California. When I finished my MSW it took awhile to find full time work but I was eventually hired by the Kaiser hospital system in San Jose and on staff there for about ten years. During this time my husband and I separated and he moved to the Presidio of San Francisco where he was able to keep contact with our daughters. When they became older I decided to pursue my travel ambitions and was able to work in contract positions with military branches overseas which had been my goal,. I feel so fortunate to have enjoyed these opportunities and the resulting life experience. I worked with the military Family Advocacy Programs for about ten years in Kaneohe Hawaii, Azores Portugal, Aviano Italy and Grafenwoehr and Ramstein Germany. During my last posting I began to experience dizzy spells eventually identified as Meniere’s , causing hearing loss and vertigo attacks. My Stewart grandmother and other family members have also been affected. I urge anyone with these symptoms to seek specialized treatment. Medication has been very effective for me, enabling some stability within the limitations of the condition, Continued

Hi Ann, Just thought I'd touch base with you. We share a ~0.78% with Florence E (Helen) Puckeridge. For me she is my 4x 1st cousin. I've been working on that Puckeridge branch and seeing if I can lay it out better as well as adding some info.

Follow up- returned to the merge of Zalmon and the hour interval seemed to clear the ptoblem-an additional strategy. Guess I have to be patient. Persistence pays off! Thanks Anne

Hi Anne

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Pam: Thank you for your greeting . I am slowly learning to participate. I was unable to add Walter Lyon 6004 as father of Wakeman Lyon 7774, as the numbers were invalid. Thanks for any help. Anne

Hi Anne,

Don't worry, WikiTree is know for having a bit of a learning curve when you're new and everyone here remembers what it was like to be new. Take your time, and explore the site...you'll soon feel as "at home" as I do!

I'm so sorry but I can't think what you mean by "as the numbers were invalid". I noticed that Lyon-7774 is an orphaned profile, and it might be easier to add his parents if you adopt the profile. To adopt the profile just click the words "adopt this profile" where you would usually find the name of the profile manager.

Let me know if this doesn't help.

Kindest regards ~ Pam

Pam

Appreciate your reply Am still getting a message that the number is invalid when trying to enter the parents- still working on it. Also am concerned about sources. I have many sources listed in my ancestry.com tree and assume 1 source is needed for each name date and place. For example could a single source such as death certificate cover all except marriage date and place. Should other or all sources be added as available or significant Should census be used primarily in lace of other sources. Trying to avoid under or over sourcing not sure as sources are so extensive. Thanks

Hi Anne,

Here's some Ancestry related links that I think you might find helpful:

Also, did you know that we have a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier? I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there (Ancestry is on the list of searchable websites). You can read more about the tool in the RootSearch FAQ. You can also find the tool at the very bottom of the right hand column under the heading "Research" on the profiles of your open ancestors.

Sources are great, and are vital for proving the facts that we wish to state, and yes - one source can cite multiple facts. Its in the collation of those facts that we can be sure that we are speaking of the same person. Only 1 source is required to create older profiles, but as time goes by it would be great if you could add more sources to help build the profiles. This is a community driven single-family tree which means that other members can add sources too, or will reach out to you to point out other sources. You're welcome to add as many sources and you can/wish too.

For the problem of connecting to the profile - Let me just double check:

You need to connect Walter Lyon as father of Wakeman Lyon 7774?
Lyon-7774 is Milo (1841 - 1914)
Could you possibly have meant Lyon-7764 Wakeman Lyon (1799-1883)?

You might find this page here helpful Help:Adding Family.

Good luck...and give me a shout if you get stuck.

Kindest regards ~ Pam

Hi Pam

Here I am back with issues as usual! I now find myself labeled as Anonymous-think that is new and don’t know what I did Am trying to work on the profile. Thanks Anne

Hi Anne,

No worries at all - I remember when this happened to me for the first time. Go into the edit page, you'll see

  • Proper First Name: (this will not show publicly and can only be viewed by you and anyone on your trusted list)
  • Preferred Name: (this is what will display on your profile for everyone to see - depending on your privacy settings. To see what other people can see of your profile click the first green tab labelled "Profile (public view))"

If both fields are absolutely identical then it only displays once, if not then it will display like this:

eg: My profile says:
Proper First Name: Pamela Cindy
Preferred Name: Pam
Which displays differently in each view:
Private view: Pamela Cindy (Pam) Cormac Smith formerly Cormac
Public view: Pam (Cormac) Cormac Smith

When this happened to me what I had done was removed the text from one of the above mentioned fields, then the system automatically entered in "Anonymous" in the newly blank field. If this is what happened to you and you just want Anne to be displayed on both the private and public views then enter:

Proper First Name: Anne
Preferred Name: Anne

I hope this helps, if not don't be shy to let me know and I'll try something else.

That's wonderful Anne - I knew you could do it. It just takes a little exploration and fumbling around....and use the tools at your disposal (ie, me, G2G chat forum, the WikiTree help pages, app's and tools)

Have fun and give me a shout anytime you need to *¨*.¸.•*¨*🐰

Hi Pam: I am really enjoying the feedback from my tree and don’t know exactly how I am generating it I notice some have “Here is my family tree” under communications preferences-don’t think I have it not not sure but assuming it should be there for the best exposure to all interest Do I need to make some changes or additions Still adding to the tree generations. thanks Anne

That's wonderful news Anne!

Yes, we do all kinds of things on our own profile pages - things like linking to other trees we have in other places online, advance directives (to say who we'd like to take over our profiles if we are no longer able to), post brick walls (this really works), show which branches we're currently working on, or which projects we're involved in...anything you can think of...

WikiTree profiles are well indexed by google, which means you get great exposure. The profiles are also searched by other genealogy websites too, so as you add more profiles people on other sites will get "hits" to profiles that you have created. Keep adding to your profiles (even little tweaks) and they'll rank higher on google too.

I have been trying to merge the duplicates I entered Booth 10758 and Booth 10766 and am told the numbers are invalid, will continue to try follow merge directions. Thanks

Hi Anne,

It might need the dash, their wikitree ID's are Booth-10758 and Booth-10766

Good luck - let me know if this didn't solve your problem
