Taking over a profile

When you are the creator of a profile just 2 days ago,  of a close relative and are actively working on it, is there a reason someone would need to take over the profile as manager without explanation, esp. when you consider they are doing nothing with it?

Could you give us a link to the profile? Perhaps we can see what's going on.
If you created the profile, the system will automatically set you as manager.  So the other person could not take it over anyway - unless you have agreed to merge your profile into his profile, which would make you both PMs.
Is it Hough-2256? If it is, Samantha is correct, and the profile was created by the other person in 2018.
Your Contributions and the Changes log for Hough-2256 show that you did a lot of work on the profile, but did not create it and never managed it.  As others noted, another member created the profile in 2018, and no one touched it until you started working on it 29 Apr.  You can send a Trusted List request and ask to be added as a manager.
I have to disagree with part of what you said. I was wrong in saying I created the tree, that was my mistake, and I apologize. I disagree with what managed means. I think that managing a profile means taking an active part in adding information (valid sources). When you have a profile on WikiTree that resides for two years without legitimate info, that profile eventually falls into the "volunteers needed to find sources for xxx profiles". This leaves less time for members to focus on other research areas.
I think you might like to read this page, which sets out what a Profile Manager is and does:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Profile_Manager

Essentially, a manager obviously adds sources etc, but in reality leads collaboration and watches over privacy issues.  Have a read and see what you think.
Ros,
Should I now go and adopt several orphaned profiles, thereby being the "manager" and just let them sit for months, waiting for someone to start collaborating with me?

Everyone chooses how they will participate. There is no requirement. Some a lot. Some not at all, which can be very frustrating. Just know every bit you do helps and is appreciated by those who do participate.
Kaylinn,

That's exactly right. I have done a lot of work on pay sites, where you don't get much cooperation. My son is a recent joiner of Wikitree and we will collaborate to some extent, but he has a young family (so I assume he will have limitations as well). There are some people on WikiTree that seem to have the experience and put together things in ways I hope to in the near future. I think some people that started the old way (researching with physical records etc) have an advantage over us that came from a the big box Ancestry type background. As Ancestry is just profit driven, they care very little about what is right, wrong, etc. I have my doubts about trees having 35,000 people being actually researched and am absolutely floored when viewing them.
Hi Mark

Just want to add something I hope will help. You use the word "own" in speaking of profiles, but there is no "ownership" of profiles on WT-- just respect for one another's management. I bring this up because you you also mention that your son may collaborate with you to a limited degree. You should also be prepared for collaboration from other descendants as well as unrelated folks-- much like the good work you did which started this whole conversation. Usually people's editing is an improvement, but sometimes we make mistakes. Just try to give us the benefit of the doubt and assume good intentions.

Cheers!
Stephanie,

I appreciate the concern. Sometimes a mistake is just that, a mistake. The vast majority of those on WikiTree are extremely helpful as you seem to be. The vast majority of people on WikiTree do not know each other personally either (truly in-person). Did you ever have a bit of brain fog when you first wake up? Make a wrong assumption and regret it (your comment) just after you hit the enter key? ...there is no delete key. What I notice happens (sometimes), is that when someone has misspoken, the perception can be that the person is rude or not a team player, when it isn't the case at all. I understand how WikiTree works. Have I been a member a long as others? Obviously not. I have worked on a lot of trees where there has not been a (according to WikiTree standards) valid source, yet they are there and I have either researched and sourced them accordingly. Sometimes I come up with nothing, that happens as well (with me). I find it is important not to be either too impersonal nor too sensitive. What I find important is the recognition that people are valued for putting their hearts into it, but we will make mistakes. Sometimes it's easier to find mistakes in others work easier than our own, and that's because we think in different ways. That's the good thing about collaboration, which sometimes leads to debate.  And debate isn't always bad as it often (not always) leads to resolution and improvement. Wikitree isn't perfect, no site is. Neither are any one of us.

Did you get a trusted list request? Or is this a profile you wish to be co-manager of?
by Natalie Trott G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
No, there was no communication of any sort concerning management of the profile. Since I have never requested to take a profile over, I know very little of this sort of thing. I have taken orphaned profiles, but that's about it. the persons profile that I previously owned is my uncle. The "new" manager is 11th cousin, I believe, and has not added anything to it.
Natalie,

There is almost no difference between being on a trusted list and being a profile manager. The main difference is if your name appears on the profile. I just request to be put on trusted lists for profiles I care about, and after many times doing this I’ve never had a problem.

I think I have found the profile you are asking about but that was created in January 2018 by the current profile manager.
by Samantha Thomson G2G6 Pilot (260k points)
You (all) are right about the ownership. I should have kept better track of it. I see it's not connected to the preexisting Porter-12911 who is the spouse (2nd marriage) of Hough-2256 (same manager of both). No, I don't want to co-manage the profile. Thank you.

Different people have different work styles. Some will create a profile and fully develop it fully right away. Others will create several (or many) skeleton profiles, then come back to them later on to more fully develop them. The disadvantage of the latter work style, especially if they created many profiles, is that sometimes skeleton profiles like Hough-2256 sit idle for quite while before the profile manager gets back to them.

I prefer the first of the two work styles I described, but during the Connect-a-thon last year, I stepped outside my comfort zone and created a high number of skeleton profiles with only one or two sources and practically no biography other than the default which is created upon manual profile creation. I'm trying to get back to them all, but it definitely takes time. It's not that I don't care about those profiles, but time has not allowed me to get back to them all. I'm embarrassed about them, but I'd be especially mortified if someone came on G2G and accused me of having deliberately neglected any of them.

It is possible the profile manager of Hough-2256 added a number of skeleton profiles and has just not gotten back to them all. This may be his usual style, or it may have been his style when he first joined WikiTree (which was only a short time before Hough-2256 was created.) He is an active WikiTreer so he is not neglecting the total body of WikiTree work. It just may be that he hadn't gotten back to Hough-2256 yet--not that he was never going to.

You did a very good job adding sources and writing the biography for Hough-2256. Hopefully, the profile manager will be appreciative.

Nelda,

I apologized for making the error in ownership one time, and a second time I said that  I should have kept better track of it. If you read from start to finish I initially wanted advice on a scenario only. I did not mention anyone's name or specific profile. I did this with the desire to keep it a generic question. I also never said that anyone on Wikitree was guilty of deliberately neglecting anything or that he/she would never get back to it. Was it a judgement error putting it on G2G? Yes. It's a mistake I won't make again.
