We are pleased to announce that the Global Cemeteries Project is reorganizing as a functional project and relaunching as the new Cemeterist Project! This change will help us to better align with our member badge, as well as serve as the foundation to better support WikiTree during the Year of Accuracy.

In order to meet WikiTree's global mission, and the goals of this project, our members will be those who volunteer to partake in a series of tasks in their local areas, from start to finish:

  • photographing tombstones, markers, monuments, and memorials;
  • transcribing the data contained within these photographs to ancestor profiles, while also ensuring that all duplicates are merged to the lowest number;
  • honor our ancestors by creating biographies that conform to the WikiTree Style Guide, and are connected to the main WikiTree family tree;
  • finding and adding additional reliable sources for the profiles we create or edit (e.g., Birth, Marriage, and Death Records; Census Records;);
  • identifying and grouping these profiles through the use of relevant cemetery and regional categories; and
  • documenting the history of cemeteries through the use of free-space pages.

If you have your camera in hand and are ready to start working your local cemeteries, please submit your 'Answer' below and let us know what area you will be documenting cemeteries in!

GCP Members, please submit a new request to join the Cemeterist Project!

Hi there! I want to join. I live in Santiago, Chile. And (this is a one day offer!) I'm visiting Buenos Aires, Argentina and I'm open to special requests if there's any particular need of taking photographs or gathering information.

Hello Steve, I would enjoy joining in, up here in the wilds of the hill farms of Northeast Wales, there are a lot of family plots on the farms themselves. As some of these farms are multi-generational there are opportunities for family histories that might not as easily found in more urban areas.

There are also very old cemetairies up in the villages.

The only problem at the moment is we are in total lock down, and access to our neighbors is limited, so my participation n't be much at the moment.

Hi Steve

I have already photographed quite a few cemeteries around the region...I ready to share providing there is an easy way to upload the information & images.

Keen to learn more

Susan
by Susan Doyle G2G Crew (500 points)
Hi Susan, what area are you located in?

I live in Woodend, Victoria, Australia and have fully photographed many of the smaller country cemeteries near me...some have already been transcribed & uploaded to www.gravestonephotos.com, these are accessible through ancestry or direct from their website.

I do not upload to find-a-grave as it is too difficult & the photos all need uploading individually, which is too time consuming for me. I'm happy to share all I've done with wiki if you have a simple way to do this.

Happy to learn more

 Susan

I would like to work on the cemeteries in Ogle County, Illinois.  I have many pictures and listings.  I will start with Buffalo Grove Cemetery.  You have great guidelines for creating the pages, so I will plan to get started this weekend.

I would like to join.

I have been working on a project about the Alton Cemetery, in the village of Alton in Peel Region, Ontario for about 5 years. Almost all of the people buried there are related to my husband.  All 86 profiles in the Alton Cemetery category are his relatives.

I have photos of most of the headstones, I won't be able to take more until we are out of lockdown and it's spring.

Also today I found a website that has documented 16 Cemeteries on Barbados, it's not something I can be involved with, the site has pictures and transcriptions and all info is Creative Commons licensed.

Hi,

I'd like to help with Cumbria, England.  I have thousands of photos that I've taken for FindAGrave, and most of them I've transcribed carefully (I usually take one of the full gravestone then more to make sure it's all readable). I'm more interested in the ground work part and basic data operations.  I'd start by uploading the photos I've already taken and adding more as I take new ones. I'm also willing to do requests as time and travel restrictions allow.

I am working on the cemeteries associated with the Wikitree weekly challenge. I have been adding cemetery categories to the guest's ancestor's profiles and making Free space pages of the Cemeteries that they are buried in. I hope this qualifies me for membership in this project. Here is an example of a Free Space page I made recently.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Montrepose_Cemetery%2C_Kingston%2C_New_York

At the same time, I may go to some local cemeteries in New Jersey and try to connect people I knew in life to the their graves and the tree.
by Nancy Wilson G2G6 Pilot (149k points)

Hi Nancy, the focus of the project is through the use of our own photos and transcriptions to build profiles. I will add you down for New Jersey.
