Come join us!! We are having a blast!
by Pam Fraley G2G6 Pilot (151k points)
I'd like to join, but I'm not exactly sure which ones. I have ancestors who lived from Pennsylvania and Maryland, down to South Carolina, and all in-between.
Just pick any one, it doesn’t restrict you from working on other areas. You can also pick more than one!
I would like to join. Don't know which team as I have family all over the area.

Hello, I would like to participate in this project as a member of the North Central team. My interests are in Monongalia and Marion Counties in Virginia/West Virginia, and Adams and Brown Counties, Ohio. I have created many profiles in these counties in my quest for all the descendants of my 3ggf William Robe.
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (321k points)

I have added you to the North Central team and feel free to add/update profiles from all of Appalachia.  I will send you an email detailing the next steps for new members.

Welcome Margaret,

You are on my team! Glad to have ya!

Pam
Hi Margaret, I currently live in Adams County.  I do not know your ancestor but it's nice to meet another researcher from Adams County.

I’d love to join the project!  Most of my ancestors either lived in or passed through Southwest Virginia.  Please put me on the Central and South Central groups.  May my ancestors from PA and OH forgive me.  (I live in Georgia, so I could help with that area as well).

Sandy, You know that I work a lot on Virginia and Maryland profiles.  But those are almost all coastal centered around Baltimore and Richmond.  But my wife's family is all Pittsburgh and I would be glad to help for that region and extend her line out a lot further.
by Gurney Thompson G2G6 Pilot (457k points)
Gurney,

Thanks for joining the Appalachia Project!  We are thrilled to have you extend your wife's line to Pittsburgh!

Sign me up for the Appalachia Project, South Central team.  I'm from Augusta County, VA, not now part of Appalachia itself, but many of the profiles I've dealt with have roots in adjoining counties like Highland, Rockbridge or Bath, or Independent Cites of Lexington, Buena Vista and Covington.

My maternal grandmother's family roots are deep in Rockbridge/Lexington! That side was Shewey/Dawson if those names sound at all familiar to you. :)

Hello cousin Jack,

I've just joined the project too so will be seeing you around more! smiley

Hello, I’m interested in the Back Creek area in Virginia.  Not sure which color coded area on the map it’s located. My Williams ancestors are truly challenging and records are tough to find.

It looks like you would be a great fit for the South Central team where the Back Creek, Virginia area is located.

I will get you added to the South Central team but feel free to add/update profiles from all of Appalachia.  I will send you an email detailing the next steps for new members.

Hello Sandy.  I would love to participate in this project. I'm originally from a coal mining camp in Harlan County, KY and both my wife and I have deep roots in the region. In particular, SE Kentucky, SW Virginia, and E TN.  Please add me to the Central and South Central groups. Thanks!

Please join me in the Central and South Central as well, Sandy. Was surprised, Todd we were back at 8th cousins.  I bet there's a closer cousin-ship yet to be added !   I really have ancestors from every region of this map. But, the most colorful and challenging to research are from those two.
by Loretta Morrison G2G6 Pilot (178k points)

BTW, Sandy we are 6th cousins in the Penninger branch smiley

We connect through my Bennett line.  Interesting!

Thanks for joining the Appalachia Project.  I have you signed up for the Central and South Central teams.  Keep in mind that you are not limited to just those two areas for adding and updating profiles.

I just sent you an email that includes the code for our project sticker and some tips on the next steps

Hi All,

I don't know why I didn't see this post until now. I'm up to my neck with this region. Put me down for everything.

I specialize in eastern Kentucky, and those people branched out to OH, WV, GA, AL. I have other relatives in TN. The Kentucky people originally started in Virginia.

I see that the Shenandoah Valley is not considered Appalachia, is that correct? I manage a One Place Study for the Shenandoah Valley.

If you ever need a leader / coordinator, let me know.
by Eric Weddington G2G6 Pilot (520k points)
Hi Sandy, I see you're Interim Team Lead for the PI team. I'm willing to take on Team Lead for that team. The Northern area is where I probably have the least experience in out of all of the regions.

Eric -

Happy to have you join all of the Appalachia Project's teams!  We can definitely help you add a sticker to all of your existing Appalachian profiles while you add more to WikiTree. wink

I have aleady sent you an email with some tips and the what's next steps.  I will also send you a separate one about your Shenandoah Valley OPS.   Based on the timeline, there might be some that can be included in Appalachia.

Eric -   Just saw this.  I'll send you an email and you can let me know your thoughts.

So, I'd love to hear more about this project and what requirements there are for membership.  I think a lot of my father's paternal line lie in the south central areas (i'd have to compare y'alls map pic to some of my known locations to confirm) AND some of my mother's paternal relatives mined in PA (Jessup etc)... so maybe they fall in that northern location.
by Caroline Verworn G2G6 Mach 9 (92.0k points)

Hi!

Our main requirement is that you have signed WikiTree's Honor Code, which you have already completed.  wink

We are asking for volunteers to add/update/source/improve profiles that fit in the Appalachia regions (the colored map is a great guide!).

Our mission is to showcase the people, culture, immigration and identity of Applachians through genealogical research.  This also allows us to work with several other WikiTree Projects - collaboratively.

We would love to have you join the Project as you work on your parental family lines.
