How do I remove Dodson-636 and replace it with Dodson-537 in my tree

Several months ago a merge between Dodson-636 and Dodson-537 was proposed. I compared both Bios and it was clear there was not a match so I rejected the match. Shortly after that Dodson-636 appeared in my tree in place of Dodson-537. I have gone three generations beyond Dodson-537 and the appearance of Dodson-636 distorts my tree. Dotson-537 is my 4th Great Grandfather on my mother's side

Maybe someone thought that Dodson-636 should go where you had Dodson-537. You can remove Dodson-636 and replace him with Dodson-537. Just be sure the ancestors line up with what you think is correct and are sourced to that effect. Check children and parents, grands and so on to be sure all is correct.

You probably should contact the PM of each of those profiles, if they are active and explain what you are doing so that they will not be caught unaware like you were.

According to the ancestral view, both the William Dodson males are descendants of the same Common Ancestor - Charles Dodson sr, just by way of different sons.

As to how to remove, you go into the EDIT tab and on the right side where it says father, you should see an add/remove link. You click that link, and then relink to the correct profile.

You may also want to put a section with a heading (Research Notes is a good one to use) explaining that Dodson-537 is correct and why, and to please do NOT change without discussing with you, the profile manager.

I too have also had a profile attached as an ancestor of mine with no sources whatsoever other than it came from a GEDCOM, But there is circumstantial evidence that proves this unknown couple are NOT my ancestors - specifically in the childrens details and sources.

I have left these fake ancestors in place for now, but I did add a RESEARCH NOTES section explaining why I did not think they were correct. When I do find the correct source for MY Ancestors, then I will be removing the fake ancestors.

William Dodson  (Dodson-636) born 1750 in Virginia and died after 1830 in White county, Tennessee is the son of Lambeth Dodson (Dodson-632) and not the son of Thomas Dodson Jr. (Dodson-438) as previously listed.  Thomas Dodson Jr.'s son William Dodson (Dodson-537) was born 1737 in Virginia and died 1832 in North Carolina.  William Dodson (Dodson-636) and William Dodson (537) are two different men with two different fathers.  The biography for William Dodson (Dodson-636) originally had a date of death of 1830 in White County, Tennessee.  This was changed on the 18th of October 2022 to the incorrect dates of 1832 for date of death and place of death changed to Iredell county, North Carolina.   It is possible you are confusing two different men who were born at different times and died at different times and in different locations.  Also, William Dodson (537) had a son named William Dodson (Dodson-100).  William Dodson (636) is believed to also had a son named William "Bucky" Dodson/Dotson for whom there is no profile.

Byron, I have sent you a private email with information and extracted pages on your Simon Dodson.  As I mentioned in my email to you, Simon Dotson-489 is the son of William Dodson-636.  However, the name(s) of William Dodson-636's wife or wives is currently unknown, so Mary Franks Dodson (Franks-1425) should be removed as Simon's mother.  The year of birth for Simon Dotson should be changed to about or before 1772 to more accurately reflect his possible year of birth.  Page 209 of The Dodson (Dotson) Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia: A History and Genealogy of Their Descendants Volume One, by Mrs. Sherman Williams, Compiler and Editor and The Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. Publisher, copyright 1988, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley, South Carolina, list Simon's birth as between 1761 and 1772.  I believe Simon was born closer to 1772 based on William Dodson's year of birth being about 1750, which would make William Dodson about 11 years of age if Simon was born about 1761, and too young to be Simon's father.  However, if Simon was born about 1772 William Dodson would be about 22 years of age when Simon was born which is far more likely.  Also, Simon married in 1794, and if Simon was born about 1772 Simon would have been about 22 years of age at the time of his first marriage instead of 33 years old.
