The January 2024 Connect-A-Thon is happening soon!!

REGISTER for the Connect-A-Thon ON THIS G2G POST!!

START Friday, January 19, at 8 AM EST (1pm UTC)

FINISH Monday, January 22, at 8 AM EST (1pm UTC)

The goal of the Connect-A-Thon is to decrease the number of profiles that are not connected to our big tree.

We do this by adding relatives (missing parents, siblings, spouses, or children) to existing profiles and hopefully somewhere connect another branch!

Please check out our Team Page or post any questions you have here on the chat.

We are also using Discord for anyone who wants to live chat there.

As always, you can send me a direct message if you prefer!

I've been adding profiles, so have bumped our team count a bit, I think. Just adding profiles doesn't necessarily achieve the Connect-a-Thon goal of connecting up the millions of unconnected people into the main tree, though. Adding in some missing cousins to already connected relatives will bump our numbers, but doesn't help achieve that overall goal.

The latter goal is difficult, to be sure. I've been working on my own unconnected list, unrelated to me of course (the result of Data Doctor challenges), but it's hit and miss - no easy way to predict how many generations back I'll have to go, or how many cousins I'll have to attach a spouse to, before I can finally make that connection into the big tree.

Hi Jim! Yes I see on the tracker you have been credited for 8 profiles.

I, too, have several unconnected profiles on my watchlist. I've done lots of Connect-A-Thons and only once in a while am able to connect to someone already in the tree. It takes time!
I have 15 unconnected on my watchlist , 4 will probably stay unconnected as they are just names on headstones, and no records of any type.

1 person who could be connected if I add about 300 years of Québec ancestors to connect her to ancestors who arrived in Québec about 1650.

The other 10 will get connected as I continue to add other families in the Alton, Ontario area.
Sorry, I got when it started late and I did understood what making connections means

I'm gonna be better next time

Do we do this every months ?
Yes connecting the unconnected is difficult and more complicated. I did that "thon" in November, but it was rewarding.

Not every month!! That would be a lot!

If you look at the Upcoming Events on this G2G post, the next Connect-A-Thon is scheduled for April!

Thank you I'll be so ready you won't believe it

See you in april

How do I find the TEAMS server and #team-canada channel on Discord? I have access to the WikiTree server and posted on #general-chat but no luck so far.

by Stuart McCormick G2G6 (8.8k points)
Have you tried selecting “Browse Channels” which is at the top left under “Events”? It should show up under “Teams”. There will be “general-thon-chat” then below it “team-canada”

If you still can’t see it you may need to be added to the channel.

I hope this helps!
Hi Stuart!! I replied to your post on Discord as well. As of right now you still need to be verified; after that, your roles will be assigned and you will be able to see the other channels.

I didn't really know what this was until after the registration date was passed.  Can I still join the chat and participate? I know I won't get any prizes or anything, just would be fun to be involved.

Yes!!! Welcome Danielle!!

I just finished connecting a fairly large (99 profiles) family to the tree! I've been working on this family for some time! I believe my trail started at Marler-274 and finally connected to Naseby-12.

Hi Team, I've been able to connect a previously unconnected group that I found on the Unconnected Ontario report with 40 profiles and a name that I recognized from my own tree. I didn't track how many I added to that group before making the connection, or how many I've added to other unconnected groups that still aren't connected, so I'm not sure if it was a net positive toward reducing the number of Unconnected, but I have learned some good things.

In particular, the Missing LInks app, which I understand is being retired in favor of something similar, was new to me, but I did find useful in connecting some of the smaller groups on my watchlist.

For my question, I have identified an Abraham Lebar, Lebar-1, who may be a key to connecting the largest Unconnected group on my watchlist. It appears that he owned 55 acres of land in Concession 3 Lot 25 of West Flamborough Township, according to the 1851 Agricultural Census. It appears that FamilySearch has at least temporarily reorganized the county locations for their online records, so I'm not able to find the land records for Wentworth County to look into this further. Does anyone have any suggestions for tracking down land records for Wentworth County?

Thanks for any help and good luck to you!

I'm just starting to add profiles today and I don't see the Connectathon on my tracker. How do I fix this?

Never mind, I forgot that they are tracked automatically. :)

OGS - Ontario Genealogy Society - the local branch - Hamilton - would have records. You will probably have to pay but their costs are reasonable.  The Local History Department of the Hamilton Public Library would have things. I went to an Open House there once - it was great. The Local History Department of the Niagara Falls Public Library is wonderful and I am search Hamilton's would be every bit as good. There is also https://www.ontariogenealogy.com/. You have to pay here for sure but you could search his database to see what he has. He has something that I want but I can get it from the Archives of Ontario although that's a bit of a hassle.

If you have the township, lot and concession number, then you can look that up on ONLand. Homepage - Ontario Land Registry Access (onland.ca)
Also, check the Ontario township papers on FamilySearch. https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/185567

I couldn’t find a thread for the current Thon, so I’ll post here. I’m planning to take a slightly different approach this time. I’ll continue with the USBH 1880 project with individuals born in Canada and people connected to them. I know about the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, but does anyone know about other Canadian community projects with family histories that might help this effort?

As an Ontarian, I didn’t know about the USBH migration to northern Saskatchewan. Working on the 1880 project, i came across this gentleman https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harper-17976

There is stories about another family on his profile, not sure if they are here at WT.

Will try to find two other potential Cdn USBH 1880 profiles

I plan on continuing to work on one of the April Canadian notables monthly connection challenge profiles. she has already been connected but she still needs 1880 USBH profiles added.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/King-63146

You can check this branch and see if any profiles are needed https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Newby-1900

Salome Bey (Cdn USBH profile ) is still unconnected https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wideman-563

This profile from Essex, Ontario profile needs 1880 census usbh profiles . 1880 census linked to profile

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fitzbutler-1

The history of these brothers trip to Canada are documented at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Howard-28313

Within this branch, here is a profile that needs 1880 profiles

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Payne-15845

His wife was born in Ontario.

In the notable Shadd family that ends up in Ontario, here is a profile that needs 1880 profiles. There might be more

Is there anything we need to tag the profiles with to make them count towards the Thon? Or is anything that qualifies automatically picked up?
by Keenan Sutherland G2G4 (4.7k points)
Question 1:  no

Question 2:  yes
Thanks Tommy!
