What is the difference - Categories: French Immigrants to New-France | Quebecois | Canada, Nouvelle-France.

I have recently seen a new category:

Up to now, I have used: .

What is the difference?

Gaston, the link to the French Immigrants category opens a new category .. Can you fix it (I tried, but could not).

Good question, by the way!
Bonjour Isabelle,

No I can not as I am not part of development policies or practices within WikiTree. Someone else will have to address that.
Merci, Gaston. Ce qui est curieux c'est que les liens vers les catégories Quebecois et Canada, Nouvelle France marchent très bien...

EDIT - never mind, I fixed it. Woohoo! Problem with different dashes.

I would say the categories have slightly different purposes.

is a location category; is an immigration category.

The immigration category, however, has not been added to the category hierarchy yet.

Profiles with the "NEW" sticker "Canada, Nouvelle-France" will  automatically be added to the category.

I find that having 2 such similar categories is confusing fo anyone not aware of all the possible intentions of categories makers..

I have been adding profiles to since its creation and I find find out, now, that it "has not been added to the category hierarchy yet"!

Now, what happens? Will I have to enter 2 categories and who will go back on all the previous entries to add the NEW category?

Gaston,

if someone was born in France and came to Nouvelle-France... you use the same template you're using now.

If someone was born in Canada,Nouvelle-France we will have a new sticker to show he is a canadian.

On the category page for "Canada, Nouvelle-France" is says it is for people born in Canada, Nouvelle-France before 1760.

The profiles with Quebecois Project Template go automatically into Quebecois category.

Makes sense to me!  Quebec was only one region of Nouvelle France back in the day.
Quebec city only existed at that time.  Quebec as a region did not exist... the region was Canada, Nouvelle-France :)

The Quebecois template itself says:

Royal French Flag
... lived in New France, in what is now Québec.
Join: Quebecois Project
Discuss: QUEBECOIS

I have added this to profiles born/lived in Nouvelle-France as well as this template for French immigrants to Nouvelle-France:

Flag of France

... migrated from France to New France.

Flag of New France

If the profiles have the Quebecois template. should they also get the  , or is that redundant?

For example, French immigrant https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Phocas-2.

For example, born in New France https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Phocas-10

hi Gaston,

I just met with Guy over lunch, we are working on refining the categories for this area.  French immigrants to New France remains what it's always been, applicable to immigrants only.  Canada, Nouvelle-France is a location category, which we will be refining.

Please note...

I disbled the sticker "Canada, Nouvelle-France" until further development.

We continue using the immigration template and the Quebecois Project template.
I think that this is a wise decision. Once a new decisions  adopted, could you find a way to clearly notify those of us likely to apply them? And at the same time, inform us on how the back log will be treated?

I know you aim well but clarity and communication are essential to avoid turmoil and loss of interest.
tout à fait d'accord Gaston, on travaille à rendre le projet plus cohérent, possiblement lui changer son nom, qui porte à confusion en soi.  On avisera tout le monde lorsque ce sera résolu.
