I imported my gedcom but don’t see how it helps populate my tree without having to retype everything?

Somewhere you will find a father who is the father of one of your people. Add  your person as a child. Hey Presto, you're connected.

Hmm - along the lines Tom mentioned, I took a look at the start of your tree. The only profile I could do much with was this one:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Elliott-10274

The rest were still privacy protected. No worries - from here at least we have a starting place. I'll take a guess at some sources:

* Born 1907 - son of George and Rosa - has potential

"United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2C2-D6B : accessed 28 October 2017), Robert H Elliott in household of George Elliott, Winona, Logan, Kansas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 90, sheet 2B, family 39, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 445; FHL microfilm 1,374,458.

* This one's unlikely - Harold B in 1920 - born 1905 - son of Arthur and Alma

"United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2CW-TLX : accessed 28 October 2017), Harold Elliott in household of A G Elliott, Dodge Ward 1, Ford, Kansas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 45, sheet 18B, family 26, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 439; FHL microfilm 1,374,452.

* Maybe - Robert A - born 1905 - son of Wallace and Leola

"United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2CX-1M3 : accessed 28 October 2017), Robert A Elliott in household of Wallace E Elliott, McCamish, Johnson, Kansas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 105, sheet 4B, family 112, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 443; FHL microfilm 1,374,456.

* But this one seems the most likely with his son Robert and wife Marian

"United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VR2G-HQ6 : accessed 28 October 2017), Robert Elliott, Ward 3, Kansas City, Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 106-41, sheet 13B, line 74, family 295, Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, roll 1268.

Let me know if we hit any there and we can push forward. Normally I copy my sources into my profile and then build out from there. A couple more:

"United States Social Security Death Index," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J5FT-LXM : 20 May 2014), Robert H Elliott, 24 Feb 1988; citing U.S. Social Security Administration, Death Master File, database (Alexandria, Virginia: National Technical Information Service, ongoing).

"BillionGraves Index," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:27MG-9B6 : 24 June 2015), ROBERT H. ELLIOTT, died 1988; citing BillionGraves (http://www.billiongraves.com : 2012), Burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, United States.

So this clues me in for ties to Wyandotte and Johnson counties, which says that Wallace and Leola are the more likely choices, even though the initial didn't match. Often the letters A and H get confused on the Census, so that's very possible.

But to your initial question, the profile is there - you may need to add sources to bring it up to speed, but your question is valid. The advantage is that it creates profiles that will need some TLC before they will be fully complete. The disadvantage is that you now have a bunch of semi-completed profiles out there that now need your attention. I get it. After importing a large Gedcom and spending time fixing everything it created, I wasn't sure which was the easier way to go. In the end you'll go back over all your profiles anyway to get them how you want them, so it ends up being six of one, and a half-dozen of the other. Works either way you do it. - Just my opinion on the matter.

You do'nt have to re-type everything, but you DO have to pick the people from the GEDCOM one by one. The ADD-buttons for doing this don't appear untill you have accepted or rejected all the suggested matches.

I'm not sure, but you may get to the add buttons for a family cluster when you have accepted/rejected all matches within the cluster. I'll go check the GEDCOMPARE info page for this.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCOMpare

It says:

Add buttons don't appear on comparison pop-ups until all suggested matches for all of the starting person's nuclear family members have been confirmed or rejected.

So you should be able to work family by family.

I have only imported a couple of very small GEDCOMs in this new system, so I haven't really tried it out myself.
