Uploaded gedcom now deleted [closed]

In just the little bit of time I have been dealing with a gedcom file I uploaded last night, I have decided to delete it.

The new process is much more time consuming and less efficient.

Now wonder, why the heck even upload gedcom files if out of 5k profiles I get over 2k that have suggestions for matches.  Last names not even close, some "suggestions" are based solely on the basis of the first name.  I really do not like having to compare five Marthas that are not similiar except for the fact that they are a Martha.

People are no longer linked, you now have to individually "add" the person, hence adding more time to a process that was ALREADY done in the gedcom prior to uploading.

So, what is the purpose of a gedcom file?  Why bother.

I like genealogy, helping others, but I definitely do not want to increase time for things that have already been done.

My two bits.

Hi Betty,

I also question the interest of adding GEDComs on a site like WikiTree where everyone has a single profile. Like you, I did upload a GEDCOM but did not use it.

I prefer to add people one by one and take the time to carefully review them, try to add a sourced biography and connect them to the rest of WikiTree.

It takes much longer, but in the end, we have a much better and more reliable tree.

Good luck with your work.

I originally added a gedcom years ago.  I do not remember the process being so long and drawn out as this time.  It is now a pain.  I spent two weeks trying to prepare this gedcom for a cousin, uploading via his profile, I cannot believe what uploading a gedcom now entails.  It is not in any way enjoyable.  The tree I "trimmed" in order to upload has almost 9k profiles, which I went through only to upload it now now have to go thru another lengthy process.  Just do not see the point in the gedcom files now, Iain.  :(  A shame too.
I'm sorry but  get tired of these answers that advocate the luddite approach whenever some complains about the GEDOM process. A good genenalogicalist should ensure the data in there gedcom is as far as possible correct and complete (and sourced) BEFORE uploading to wikitree. Therefore little is to be gained by manually adding the data one by one in wikitree, this is just more likely to introduce errors because of the awkward and repetitive nature of adding data manually.

I have about 4000 sourced profiles that I have not added into wikitree yet that I know are not in wikitree. But I havent added yet with gedcompare because it does a bad job of creating the biography page and I want o see if i can modify the ged file before uploading to avoid me having to edit the bio for 4000 profiles. But your advocated approach of adding them one by one would take even longer and would introduce errors.
