Hi Jacinta, we have a Louisiana Families project going (making an assumption here), I think you'll pretty quickly connect into a bunch of existing lines. When I discovered my Quebecois connection it only took two generations before I had instant tree going back to France - the beauty of our collaborative tree!

Jacinta, When i first started i thought it was pretty complicated and sometimes i still think so. But a lot has to do with documenting you profiles. Holding every one to a high standard means that the information is more trust worthy.  And once you get to the point where you link into the one Tree. you find there are others out there working on the same lines. Once your connected to the tree and as you get more connections you can see how you would be related to most anyone. Hang in there don't get discouraged this is Quality genealogy not quantity genealogy.

Hi, and Welcome, the best thing about this website is is is a collaborate effort, so instead of like ancestry where you can have 10 or more different people all doing the same family tree, this is just one big effort by everyone who uses this site. Eventually hopefully your twig will meet up with other connections already here. The other thing is we try to find reputable sources for each profile, if mistakes are found we try to fix them up, not like some sites where the mistakes are just copied and spread far and wide. Everyone is helpful, and its free. For me, it has taken a while to get used to, and adding profiles does take longer than some websites, but I think it is well worth while in investing a little time here to do your family history properly.

The best thing to do is to just jump in which you already did with yourself. Your profile is great. So next enter your parents and grandparents. And then anyone else you have good records on. I assume you are not on another site yet. Most users like using this site and another site for research. Family Search is free. Then you can find things like census data and store that with your people here. The payoff occurs when you hit someone else’s tree work and you get their knowledge added to yours.

I like this answer! If you need assistance with how to enter a profile, how to edit a profile, and other such questions, just ask. The website does take a little getting used to, but after a little time, you'll be speeding along with the rest of us.

Welcome !  My advice is to start one profile at a time.   It's  all right to make  mistakes,  they can be fixed.  Check the preview button often to see how it will view.   You  can ask for help.   Just don't forget that sources are important.   I've been here two years and am  still learning  and correcting.  Good  luck.

Welcome cousin. I giggled when I saw your name (my name at birth is Jacinthe Andréa Boudreau). You'll see after a short while that people here are most kind and helpful. Take time to wander around the help pages, project pages, etc. (this is something I wish I had known before starting). If you ever need help in digging out your roots, there will always be someone willing to help you. And I'd be glad to help you where I can. Have a wonderful journey here, on WikiTree.
