Why is this unsourced profile PPPed?

This profile is completely unsourced and not part of a project. Why is is PPPed?

EDIT: Apparently I was not clear. Please remove the PPP from this profile. It does not qualify for PPP.

This profile is completely unsourced as are all the immediate relatives attached to it and every "ancestor" profile attached to it. The nearest profile with any sources is a GGG grandson. There are no verified relationships to protect on this profile, nor are there any proven-false relationships to protect against. This profile does not belong to any project. In fact this person may or may not have ever existed.

Jo, I believe that Walter's profile was probably originally PPPed to protect the LNAB/Last Name at Birth through the various merges that have taken place. Alternately, it may have been PPPed to prevent the removal of his parents' profiles. And often, the PPP protection was added as a temporary measure and should already have been removed. Removal, however, can only be done by a Project Leader (and WikiTree Leaders?).

Previously, members could request a profile be PPPed without having to place the profile under a project's management. As I mentioned, this was generally done as a temporary measure to protect the LNAB when merges were proposed or to prevent the removal of the parents' profiles.

Our newly updated PPP guidelines now require (?) that a PPPed profile have a Project as one of its managers and that Project's Template be added to the profile.

Many profiles that were PPPed without having a project added undoubtedly still exist in the system. As Doug suggests, we should alert their managers (if they are active), check ourselves if they might fit an existing project, or bring them to membership's attention here in G2G.

I'm working on this line at the moment and it is now sourced.

That being said, since pre-1500 certification is required to work on profiles of this era, the need to protect profiles like this from bad merges, LNAB changes or changes in parents is much reduced.  I would think we should see a dramatic reduction in pre-1500 profiles which are PPP'd for that reason, and I would nominate this profile for removal of PPP status.

I would suggest contacting the profile managers.

I've come across this situation before, and generally one of the people who handle PPPing profiles just un-PPP them. Actually I've been told that PPP used to be put onto profiles rather indiscriminately, and I've been asked to notify someone when I run across one of these Unsourced PPPed profiles so they can remove it. Which is what I've just done.

Personally I'm not working on this particular profile beyond removing the GedCom junk and labeling it Unsourced. So if you want to leave the completely-unnecessary PPP on this unqualified profile, go for it. It's a great way to make it really difficult should anyone actually want to source this profile and end up needing to change relationships. It also lends a charming air of authenticity to a profile of someone that may or may not have ever existed.
