Notable Women, overlooked

Better late than never! In honor of International Women's Day (March 8) the New York Times did a nifty feature of belated obituaries on 15 exceptional women who'd been Overlooked

I've been down sick this week so I haven't got the energy/stamina to dig into it now. But it's a nice resource to add profiles, or improve existing profiles, for these women

  1. Ida B. Wells (1862-1931)
  2. Qui Jin (c. 1875-1907)
  3. Mary Ewing Outerbridge (1852-1886)
  4. Diane Arbus (1923-1971)
  5. Marsha B. Johnson (1945-1992)
  6. Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)
  7. Henrietta Lacks (1920-1951)
  8. Madhubala (1933-1969)
  9. Emily Warren Roebling (1843-1903)
  10. Nella Larsen (1891-1964)
  11. Ada Lovelace (1815-1852)
  12. Margaret Abbott (1878-1955)
  13. Belkis Ayón (1967-1999)
  14. Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855)
  15. Lillias Campbell Davidson (1853-1934)

Also, Mattel just released some new Barbie dolls based on inspiring women:

  1. Amelia Earhart, aviatrix
  2. Frida Kahlo, artist (married to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera)
  3. Katherine Johnson, NASA mathematician (whose story was told in the recent movie "Hidden Figures")

Everyone of these women is Notable and worthy of recognition. Better late than never! Even though I'm not fit to follow through now, I didn't want to let this notable recognition for these Notable women slip by unnoticed

Meanwhile, it turns out, Mattel actually has 17 inspiring women, not just three, being released as new Barbie dolls. Very diverse group, seemingly intended for global marketing.

Here is Ada Lovelace's profile:

Based on her wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace

She actually has a nice profile and is connected to the tree.

Same for Ida Bell Wells-Barnett:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wells-Barnett-1

However, she is missing a connection to the tree.
I did ask if we might be able to remove some of the privacy restrictions on her family - her mother at the very least should be open. We'll see if we can get her profile so that maybe we have a shot at a connection.
Diane Arbus has a profile:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nemerov-1

But no family at all - she needs some attention for sure. A biography would be nice.
Sylvia Plath has a nice profile:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Plath-66

And a connection to the global tree.
Oh, I just put in the same request, Scott. With a child born in 1862, it's automatic. Anyhow, that NY Times link might be a good one to add to the profiles. I imagine it won't disappear into the archives quickly.
I found a few sources for members of Ida B Wells's family, so added birth details where I could. There are census records for 1870 and 1880 to help creating profiles for her siblings.

There is already a profile for Charlotte Bronte in the Notables project.

This is the first day I've been out of bed for more than an hour at a time all week. I did not check. Thanks for reporting on one of them.

Have added this to the Notables March Thread

Which now has a link back to this thread.

Thanks. I wasn't sure how to handle it on the day after. I looked a little and no one had posted about those 15 Overlooked women. A great starting point, but I was posting about it late. Anyhow, thanks.

I'm surprised that Henrietta Lacks' profile is open. She isn't dead, after all! /jk

Per the profile she died in 1951.
If you look at the photo attached to the profile, it appears that the sign "implies" she passed away in 1951. I can only assume that sign was what was used as evidence of her passing.
Oh - nevermind... NOW I get the joke... sorry, early in the morning and feeling a bit sloooooow today.
You're funny and very quick.  Good on you.

I started working on Finnish presidents and will eventually add Tarja Halonen, who served 12 years as Finlands 11th president.

That led me to take a look at female heads of state and there is a long list of them. Wonder how many of them have profiles in WT?

The first American-born female president of a state is not well known and has no profile in WT.

There is so much to do.

I’ve added [Crane-5196 | Lucy Crane] https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Crane-5196 who translated the Grimms Fairytales from German to English.  These are well know tales like Rapunzel etc which have been made into movies by Disney and Pixar. Her brother Sir Walter Crane https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Crane-5185 was an artist who did the illustration for her books. I’m still working on both profiles. They are just two of a notable family of artists from the 19th century in England. Walter was a great friend of William Morris and other Art Deco artisans.
