Jane's mother was living with them in the 1940 census. John was a proprietor of a "tap room".

I looked at the Social Security Death Index and find a few possible candidates:

John Moylan b 10 Jun 1901; "last residence"  = Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts (this means where the last social security benefits check was sent). Died April 1875 in Massachusetts. I could not quickly find a Mass. birth for him.

John Moylan b 19 Feb 1902; died April 1948; SS# issued in Missouri bef 1951. He's also found in the California Death Index; indicates a Missouri birth and a Riverside, CA death. Probably not your man given the Missouri birth (1940 census says your man was born in Pennsylvania).

John Moylan b 24 May 1902; d Dec 1962; SS# issued in New York

John Moylan b abt 1900; d in Queens, NY 21 May 1946

John Moyland b 28 Sep 1902; d Jun 1967; SS# issued in Massachusetts. Not your man; his birth is found in the Massachusetts VR (born Somerville, MA)

John Moyland b 31 Oct 1899; d Dec 1958; SS# issued in Philadelphia, PA. Despite the 2-year difference in birth year, this location is much better suited to your John Moylan.

John Moyland b 30 Sep 1903; d Aug 1970; "last residence" Olyphant, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania. Another good candidate despite the 2-year difference in birth year.

I did not find an SSDI record for his wife Jane.

John F. Moylan and Jane are in the 1930 census; they've been married five years. No one else is living with them.  (I couldn't easily find Maude Daley.)

I'm assuming you're seeking living descendants, but for the record, I think John Moylan was the son of James and Mary Moylan of Philadelphia.
Hi Jillaine,

Thanks for the information. I had assumed that Maude (Daley) had emigrated with her two daughters Mary and Jane at some time between 1925 and 1935, but from the 1930 US census, it appears that Jane migrated first, in 1922.

Jane's sister Mary is also in the 1930 census, married to (Ernest) Alfred McGinn (b 1900, Liverpool), and I find great aunt Maude (Matilda) living with them, and Elisabeth and Mary, their two "English" children.

From memory, either or both of the Moylan and McGinn families moved to New Jersey (Atlantic City, I think), so I'll continue my forward search in that direction.

Once again, many thanks,

Mike

.
Mike,

I seem to recall seeing something while searching that included a reference to New Jersey. Sounds right. Good luck, and let us know if you need any help.
John and Jane Moylan were my father's aunt and uncle. John passed in 1962 and Jane passed away sometime in the 80's. They did own a tap room in Philadelphia, but moved it and their family to Margate, New Jersey, near Atlantic City. The tap room was open for many years, but closed sometime in the late 80's. Jane Moylan's daughter Jane and her husband, Charles Martin still reside in Margate. They had five children of their own.

If John died in 1962, he is likely to be this from the SSDI:

John Moylan b 24 May 1902; d Dec 1962; SS# issued in New York

Hi Jillaine,

The only problem with that is the birth year of 1902. In the 1940 census (April), he is given as 39 years old.

I've found this reference, but the date of death is May 1961. Could this be your uncle, William ?

"United States Social Security Death Index," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JBY1-6Z5 : accessed 17 December 2014), John Moylan, May 1961; citing U.S. Social Security Administration, Death Master File, database (Alexandria, Virginia: National Technical Information Service, ongoing).

Mike,

Ages reported on censuses were not always accurate. I've seen ages all over the map. And this one is only a year off. I'd look for and compare this to other records.

How old was he in 1930? Have you found him in 1920?

Have you sought a date certificate? Searched for obituaries? military records?
Hi Jillaine,

I thought I'd already replied on this, but mustn't have sent it.

Yes, my own mother was given an extra year on her UK 1911 census entry, because her birthday was a few days afterwards. In this case, though, the birthday of May 1902 would make him 37 n the 1940 census, so there would have to be a two-year difference.

Can you help out, William ?

Thx
Moylan's was a great bar.
