If Sarah's maiden name was also Tipton, how was she related to her husband before marriage?
WikiTree profile: Sarah Tipton

possibly not. there is a person on wikitree with her maiden name and marriage name the same, and they are not related.

Makes sense. But somewhere down the line, they had to have been related. As far as I know, most Tiptons, if not all, came from Jonathan Tipton, who was the first Tipton to arrive in America in the 1600sk.

There is an interesting tool on WikiTree.  Under the "Find" icon a menu displays for "Relationships" and you place the wiki-id of both people in to see if there is a relationship.  At this point there is not yet any relationship found.

Thank you. I am new to wikitree. Still learning the ropes. I will remember that tool on here.

Although these profiles aren't sourced, it is asserted that Sarah's father was Jonathan Tipton, The profile of Sarah's husband, Mordecai Tipton, shows his father to be William Tipton. William's profile shows him to be the brother, or perhaps half-brother of Jonathan Tipton Jr.. Jonathan and Jonathan Jr appear to be duplicate profiles and a merger might be in order. (Haven't sourced them, so can't say for sure.)

So it appears that Sarah and Mordecai were first cousins. This was not unusual in those days. I've found two other first-cousin marriages in the past few days while sourcing some unsourced profiles.

Interesting. I was thinking the same thing. My maternal grandparents were also related down the line from 2x great grandparents. Yes, I understand that back then it was fairly normal. Thank you for your quick detailed response.

the birth dates for sarah are different and so are the middle names for her and her husband.

Not quite sure what the dates would have to do with them not being related.  :-)
There are a couple of Sally Tiptons in this family mess. The lineage as presented in the profiles pretty much makes Sally of the initial profile in the question first cousin of husband Mordecai. As I said, the profiles are unsourced, and I haven't undertaken to attempt any research to verify the the accuracy of the data provided.

In my family, a brother and sister married the sister and brother first cousins - the paternal parents of each set were brothers.

Yes, there's a whole bunch of duplicates need merging up.

The basic tree descends from Tipton-63

https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Tipton-Descendants-63

which already shows Sarah marrying her cousin.  But the duplicate tree

https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Tipton-Descendants-1689

doesn't make the connection because it has two of Sarah's father.

It is quite likely and probable that they were cousins. I have not worked that particular line but it was very common among the Tipton's, Hyder's and Lacey's to marry 2nd and 3rd cousins.

If you are indeed interested in this line, you should read the book entitled Kissing Cousins of East Tennessee. These is a wealth of information about these family lines in this book.
