The French Roots project is co-ordinating the efforts of Wikitree-ers who want to help improve the profiles of French people.

Want to be part of the project?

1. Be informed : Read the Project Page to find out about the guidelines and what we're up to; add france to your list of followed tags.

2. Contribute: there are lots of ways you can help: correct errors, find sources (France has lots of great records available), clean up profiles, categorize, improve profiles for French notables, ...

If you are ready to help, please post an answer to this question to tell us what you'd like to do, and we'll get you all set up.

Hello

I would like to join the French Roots Project and contribute anyway I can. I have added FRENCH_ROOTS to my Tag list. My father’s side is basically 100% French with surnames Simpier aka Champoux dit st-Pair, Trombly, Monette, Valade, Dragon, Robichaud, Ronger aka Ranger,Lalonde, Montpetit, etc

Thank you
Andrew, could you please click on the "answer" link under the question at the top and place your answer there. This is the way we review project requests. Thank you!
Thank you : )
I would like to join the French Roots Project. I have maternal French Roots, surnames Nimsgern, Hergott, Hay, etc from Beting-Les-Saint-Avold, Moselle, Lorraine, France.  My 3x great-grandfather Jean Nimsgern, wife and children, came to America in 1853. My children also have paternal French Roots, through their paternal grandmother, surname Moon originally de Moyen from Normandy, France, William de Moyen, supporter of William the Conquerer, who in turn is blood related to William de Moyen's wife Adeliza de Ponthieu, daughter of Enguerrand II de Ponthieu and  Adelaide of Normandy
Hi Sandie! Could you please change your comment to an answer (click answer above)? This makes it easier for us to manage. Thank you :-)
I am interested in joining the French Roots Project.  In researching my ancestry, I find that many in the Tilley, Tilly, de Tilly, etc. family have roots in Normandy.  I am interested in searching my mother's family roots.  I have added FRANCE to my tag list.  Thank you for considering me for this project.

Good day, I am descendant of Francois du Toit from Lille, and Susanna Claudine Seugnet from Saint Onge, France. Huguenot migrants to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa in 1686.

I am interested in tracing my ancestoral line further back.

Hello,

My name is Tim Martin. My paternal 4th great grandfather was William Martin (1812-1879) and he married my 4th great grandma Virginia Copeland (1816-1888). Her death certificate says she was born in France. I'm not sure if that is factually correct. It is my goal to use DNA and paperwork to see if it is. I'd like to join this project to help correct any issue's in my Leneage and continue the efforts to connect with other family members.

Thanks Timothy, and good luck for your research! I sent you a private message.

Bonjour à tous

As said on my profile, I'm French :-)

So, of course I'm interested in this project. As a matter of fact, when I joined, I thought WikiTree was more "international" than it really seems to be. I mean, mostly American people around, right?

All and everyone of my ancestors that I know of (from my grandparents upwards) come from two parts of Bretagne, both very endogamic. So I'm particularly interested in finding connections with the rest of the world, so to speak.

I've been there for less than a week, so I've not yet entered on WikiTree all the records I have on my local files, but busy doing it. I have found so far only one connection to the global tree, but I'm eager to add more to the "French connection", and bring more French people to contribute to Wikitree!

Hello!

Please may I be considered for membership to the French roots group? My maternal ancestry is french and follows the migration from France to Indian Ocean regions with colonisation of La Réunion (formerly Ile Bourbon), Mauritius and the Seychelles where my family still lives.

I think archive info would be invaluable in confirming ancestral links

Kindest regards

Hi Angélique, as long as you are willing to help, we'll be happy to have you - we don't require French origins anyway. I'm sure you'll enjoy working with our Overseas team. I'll send you a PM right away.

Hello there,

I'd like to join your project as 100% of my ancestors are from France, mainly Burgundy region. I have started my tree 18 months ago, and already have a good tree, mostly sourced to civil and parish books...

Many thanks

Hey all! Would love to jump on board and join your cause. My French Roots run deep and I would love to be able to contribute. I currently run the Mauritian Ancestry Project and France played a big role in Mauritian colonization. My Ancestry run as far back as the D'Espinay/D'Epinay family with some very well known roles and figures in our lineage.

Kind regards

I'd love to join. My french ancestors came from Normandy. Robert Duke of Normandy is my 32nd Great grandfather according to Ancestry and other sites.
by Marsha Turner G2G3 (3.7k points)
Hi Marsha, thanks for your interest in the France project.

To clarify things, though the project goes pre-1500 it does not cover such early ancestors as Robert. We agreed to let the European Aristocrats project take charge of pre-1200 profiles in what corresponds to the French territory (it was just beginning to be called France then) and most profiles between 1200 and 1500 are theirs, too. Research on these early ancestors is very specific and better in the hands of a specialized project like Euro Aristo.

I am very interested in French genealogy. I have three families in my tree that come from the Alsace Lorraine area.  I still have some Halter relatives that live in France. Possibly some Schnebelen family too.

Hi, I’m interested in being a part of the French project. My German ancestor branch of the Aurandt line may of come from France before settling in Germany. Thank you Kelly
by Kelly Kersey G2G6 Mach 1 (13.1k points)
Hello Kelly! That is very interesting. When do you believe your ancestors were in France? Was it long ago?
The short answer as far as my direct line is based old pedigree books like Johannes Heinz and his descendants by Proctor states thatJohann Jacob Aurandt my Fourth grandfather, was born January 14,1753 in Strassebersbsch,Nassau ,Prussia. His parents were Johannes and Christina Aurandt. Johanne imigrated on the ship Union mastered by Andrew Bryson with Johan Hines the third whose sister, my fourth grandmother Elizabeth Christina Heinz married him. The French connection comes from unverified and partially verified sources with historical religious persecution and fleeing. I’m hoping through the project to find some information while also working in different project for and with others. Thank you Kelly
That makes for a unique story among the members of the project. There has been quite a bit of moving from one place to another in Alsace, for example, which switched between France and Germany (or what there was before Germany) a number of times, and of course many people who were not happy with the change would move to the country that suited them best. I will be in touch.

Hi, I believe I’m going about this right. I’m not sure if I’m a member yet as I don’t have a badge, but I’m following the France tag and have asked to join the google group. I’m very interested in understanding my roots and heritage. In the start of researching my German family roots,(a lot more to go), I realized my Aurandt:Aurand/Ourand line that emigrated and married my Heinz branch, more than very likely came from France before emigrating to Prussia. I am trying to see if this was part of the Huguenot Migration. I have a long way to go, but I believe this is part of the right direction for me and others that I can help. So I would like to be apart of this project if I am not already. Thank you - Kelly

Hello. I have been doing some research into my mom's paternal line who emigrated from France during the 17th and 18th centuries to Quebec and would like to join your group. I am particularly interested in finding roots and getting help with the surname Geromette.

Thanks for your consideration

Ron
by Ron Raymer G2G6 Mach 5 (54.1k points)
Hi Ron, I had a look at your tree and I would suggest you get in touch with the Quebecois project, as they are focussing on people who lived in present-day Quebec in the 17th and most of the 18th century, and those are not in the scope of the France project. Though we don't work on that aspect however, you are very welcome to join the France project if you wish to contribute to it.
