He was the son of Gazzaway and Mary Baker Blanton both of whom were natives of Burke County, North Carolina. Obidah Blanton grandfather of Wilson Newton Blanton was born in Virginia and removed from that state to North Carolina in his early manhood. There he married Betsy Green and they reared a family of four children. This ancestor of Mr. Blanton was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fount under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. He was a planter and slave owner in North Carolina and lived to be eighty years of age. The great-great grandfather of Wilson Newton Blanton was William Blanton, a Virginia planter who was a member of Washington’s Body Guard during the War of the Revolution. Gazzaway Blanton removed with his wife Mary (Baker) and their three children from North Carolina to Sevier County, Tennessee and their twelve children grew to maturity in that state. He was a successful planter and a man of affairs and during the Civil War served for a short time under Col. John C. Vaughn in the Confederate Army. Retiring from the army on account of ill health. Gazzaway Blanton died at the age of 83 and his wife at the age of 60. Their son Wilson Newton Blanton was educated in the public schools of Tennessee and had just attained his majority when the Civil War began. Enlisting in the First Regiment of Arkansas Volunteers, Commanded by Col. Patrick R. Clairborne, of the Confederate States Army, he served for two years, most of the time as a noncommissioned officer. He was in the Battles of Shiloh, Richmond, and Perryville, Kentucky. In 1863, he returned to his home in Tennessee and engaged in farming until the fall of 1869. Meantime, he had married Elizabeth Adeline Cass daughter of J.M. (James Melmurth) Cass and Martha (Martha Jane Ryan), July 2, 1863, and in November of 1869 removed with his family to Morris County, Kansas. A year later, he established his home in Webster County, Missouri where he devoted two years to agricultural pursuits. He then went to Benton County, Arkansas and continued farming there until 1876. He moved to Joplin, Missouri the year following. He embarked in a mining enterprise at Duenweg. He also became interested in merchandising and in 1882 removed to Webb City. For two years thereafter he conducted mining operations from that place and then removed to Carterville, which has since been his place of residence. During the years of 1888-1890 he was interested with his brother-in-law, A. A. Cass in mining enterprises at Carterville and in 1890 he opened, on which is known as the “Tracy Land” one of the riches mines in the district. These mines were operated for several years.
