Biography

Elizabeth Cobb was born on 29 October 1726 in Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of James Cobb and Hannah Rich.[1] She was baptized in Truro on June 21, 1730.[2]

She married Nathaniel Atkins in Truro on 5 January 1748/9.[3] Nathaniel died on 26 November 1762, leaving Elizabeth a widow.

It is likely that Elizabeth remarried in December 1775 to David Gorham Esq. (1712-1786). On 17 December 1775, the Truro town records record a marriage between "david gorhamses Jr at Barnstable and the wido Betty Atkins."[4] Similarly, the Barnstable town records show a marriage between "Col. David Gorham of Barnstable and Miss Elizabeth Atkins of Truro Decemr ye 2nd 1775."[5]

Elizabeth Gorham, wife of David Gorham, died in Barnstable on 28 March 1784.[6]

Research Notes

Disputed Spouse

Some, without source, have claimed incorrectly that this Elizabeth Cobb moved to New Jersey with her family when she was young and married Jacob Lasch, a German immigrant who did not arrive in America until 1752. It is certain that Elizabeth Cobb's family did not move to New Jersey when she was young. Both of her parents died and were buried in Truro in 1749 and 1755;[7] her three brothers all died in Barnstable or at sea while living in Truro between 1725-1763;[8] and of her three sisters known to have lived to adulthood, two married in Truro and one in Boston between 1754-1770.[9] As noted above, this Elizabeth Cobb also married in Truro, to Nathaniel Atkins, whose family were English and had lived on Cape Cod for several generations before he was born in 1720. There is no known evidence suggesting that Elizabeth Cobb ever lived in New Jersey or that she married Jacob Lasch.

Birth Location

There is a mis-indexed record of her birth in the FamilySearch database "New York, Church Records, 1660-1954" which incorrectly identifies her location of birth as New York. The attached image of the original record reflects the correct birth location of Barnstable, Massachusetts.

I'm curious if there is any evidence that she is the widow Betty Atkins who married, at Truro, David Gorehamses Jr. of Barnstable on 17 Dec 1775. To make things more confusing, there is a "Miss Elizabeth Atkins" of Truro who married Col. David Gorham at Barnstable on 2 Dec 1775. Presumably the same couple, but different dates, one is Betty, a widow, and the other "Miss" Elizabeth.

I am not aware of any evidence confirming it but that is a very plausible theory. Nathaniel died in 1762 and I have not been able to figure out what happened to Elizabeth. The fact that a "wido Betty atkins" is remarrying in Truro in 1775 seems like it could be a match.

Several ancestry trees suggest it to be true, and the record of David Gorham's wife Elizabeth on findagrave says she was Elizabeth Cobb Gorham and died 29 Mar 1784 aged 58 years, 5 months. That calculates to Oct 1725 when Elizabeth Cobb's birth was 29 Oct 1726, so one year off, but that's an easy enough error to dismiss. Also, the photo of the stone on findagrave is covered with lichen so you can't read her age and have to go by what the findagrave transcriber wrote. That person may have gotten it wrong and it actually read 57 years. Who knows? I've also seen sources that say his second wife was Elizabeth Stevens, which an old Thatcher genealogy also states, but not sure where that comes from. Gorham's first wife Abigail Sturgis did die in 1775 so the 1776 marriage to Elizabeth/Betty Atkins certainly makes sense.

I think this is a pretty plausible argument that it is the same person. I am going to add it into the profile based on this. Thanks!
