Biography

Jonathan was born on January 29, 1805 in Cape Rosier, Brooksville, Hancock County, Province (now State) of Maine as the son of Daniel and Anna (Trundy) Crockett. Jonathan married Jane R. Batchelder on January 4, 1827 in Prospect, Maine after filing their intention on December 11, 1826. Per Town Clerk J. P. Martin, Jonathan and Jane were married by Ezra Treat, Justice of the Peace.

Jonathan and Jane's household included 7 children in 1840, per the Federal Census of that year. The 1840 Federal Census enumerated 1 male age 30-39 (Jonathan--head); 1 female age 30-39 (wife Jane); 1 male under 5, 1 male age 5-9; 2 males age 10-14; 2 females under age 5; and 1 female age 5-9.

According to United States Federal Census Records 1850 and 1860, Jonathan and Jane had ten children, who lived into adulthood, including Samuel, Sarah Ann, Kingsbury B., Maria H., Hannah, Elijah B., Henry Trivet, Mary M., Ammon, and Eliza. John and Jane raised their family in Prospect, Maine. Two additional children, Jonathan "John" and Owen died young.

Jonathan appeared in the news as far away as Newburyport, Massachusetts. In the Newburyport Morning Herald on Tuesday, July 8, 1856 under the subheading "Accident and Loss of Life," an article was published about Jonathan, his daughter, and his house being struck by lightening. Quoting the article: "The dwelling-house of Jonathan Crockett of Prospect, Me., was hit by lightening last Sunday evening [July 6, 1856]. One end of the house was torn off, and some of the fragments thrown 60 feet. The shoes were torn off the feet of Mr. Crockett and his daughter, and several persons rendered insensible for a time. It is feared that the young lady will not recover."

Jonathan passed away on November 18, 1889 in Prospect, Maine. He is buried there at the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Research Notes

1) Find A Grave Index, Memorial ID 150771181 has noted wrong death date in overview summary. Jonathan passed away on November 18, 1889, not November 18, 1899--assumed to be a typo. Jonathan's date of death (including day, month, year) and his age at death are engraved correctly on his gravestone and published correctly in the work (1917) by Kneeland at al, source below.
