Biography

Robert Large was born about 1716. He is the son of Samuel Large and Rebecca Wilson.

He was a member of the Society of Friends otherwise known as the Quaker religion.

He was from his youth of a peaceable and quiet spirit one who sincerely loved the Truth and its faithful followers. He was for many years concerned to live near to and under the influences of the blessed Principles of life and salvation, professed by the Society of Friends, and thereby was brought into great heavenly-mindedness. In meetings for worship and discipline, he was a patient, humble waiter for the arising of Divine Life, witnessing thereby his strength renewed from time to time. He was an approved elder in the church, and being enabled to lead an honest, circumspect life and maintaining our Christian testimonies in their primitive simplicity and fullness, he was of great use in his day. His friends of Kingwood Monthly Meeting, of which he was a member, say “Although he had not a public testimony to bear, yet we esteemed him a preacher of righteousness in life and conversation. As a husband, father and neighbor, he was a good example, and very charitable to the poor.[1]

Robert Large married Rhoda Wileman. He requested a certificate to marry a young woman from the Buckingham, Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania.[2]

His name was listed on a petition, 12 Jan 1747/8, to Jonathan Belcher, Governor, from inhabitants of Bethlehem in Hunterdon County seeking to have the southerly part of Bethlehem Township made into a new township.[3]

His will was written 26 Apr 1765 in Kingswood Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey and proven 25 May 1774. Inventory taken 23 May 1774 valued 213.4.3 pounds.[4] He left his wife 1/4 of his personal estate; son Samuel 5 pounds; son Robert 120 acres from the North end of his plantation; sons John and Ebenezer the rest of his land when they are 21; daughter Rebecca 1/4 of personal estate; daughter Eliabeth 1/4 of personal estate; daughter Rhoda 1/4 of personal estate.[4]

He died 27 Apr 1774[1] in Kingswood Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.[4]

He is buried in the Oak Summit Cemetery, Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.[5]
