Henry Longe of Waddon was a member of the merchant tailor family of clothiers of Semington, Trowbridge and Whaddon, Wiltshire; and Beckington and Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset.[1] The PhD thesis of John Gaisford explores workings of the merchants of West Wiltshire in this time period, and the relationships between them. This includes the Longe family to which Henry Longe belonged. He and his three brothers were called "probably the most dynamic clothier family in west Wiltshire."[2]
In 1554, Henry Long I bought from Andrew Bayntun the manor of Whaddon with its mansion house and fulling mill on the Semington Brook, just south of the Avon; around the same time he also acquired the lease of Monkton, on the north bank of the Avon.[3]
His father was another tailor, Henry Long of Semington who left a will dated 1535.[4] Online trees, including the FamilySearch site, make his father to be the same as the Henry Longe of Draycot Cerne who married Eleanor Wrottesley.[5] This is clearly in error as Henry Longe of Draycot Cerne died in 1558 and did not have a son Henry.
He married Mary Horton, the daughter of Thomas Horton, another wealthy tailor.[6] They had 4 known children.
Henry Longe of Whaddon died after 20 October 1558. He left a will proved on 17 November 1558.[7] His wife also died testate and her will was proved on 15 Oct 1562.[8] When Henry Long was dying in 1558, he clearly doubted the capacity of his eldest son Thomas, and left him only a house at Heywood near Westbury and the statutory one-third of his manor of Whaddon; the remainder of Whaddon with its 500 acres was bequeathed to his second son, Henry Long II, who succeeded to the clothing business.[9] His widow Mary evidently shared her husband’s view on her eldest son, leaving him only £60, on condition that "he keep himself in honest demeanour and good behaviour and that he neither vex nor trouble my husband’s executor nor overseers nor cause them to be vexed or troubled."
Birth
Born: Say 1510, possibly in Semington, Wiltshire which was his father's principle residence.
The date is a rough estimate based on his known career, and estimated dates of other family members. His grandson was born c1561, making estimates of his son being born about 1535, and his own birth about 1510 to be reasonable rough estimates.
He was the son the clothier Henry Longe of Semington who died testate in 1535. Note that suggestions that he was the son of Henry Longe of Draycot Cerne who married Eleanor Wrottesley is clearly an error.
Marriage and Children
Married: Mary Horton about 1535. She was the daughter of Thomas Horton of Westwood and Margaret Barkesdale of Keevil.[10] They had four known children. Mary died testate before 15 October 1562 when her will was proved.[11]
Henry II Longe of Whaddon (c 1540-1610). He married Mary May.
Edward Longe of Monkton (c. 1545-1622). He married Anne Brounker.
James Longe (mentioned in Wills of both parents).
Margery Longe. She married Thomas Hedge.
William Longe (named in father's Will only).
Judith Longe (named in Wills of both parents).
Thomas Longe (youngest son; both Thomas the elder and Thomas the younger are mentioned in the Wills of both parents).
Mary Longe (mentioned in Wills of both parents).
Eleanor Longe (named in mother's Will. She is likely the unborn child provided for in her father's Will).
Death
Died: Henry Longe died 17 October 1558 in Semington, Wiltshire, England, where he is buried.[citation needed]
Will
Relatives named in Henry's Will include his sister-in-law, Cicely Longe, widow of his brother Robert Longe of London (Will proved 1552); his brother Thomas Longe (Will proved 1563) and his wife Johan (Yerbury); his mother-in-law Mistress Horton; his brother-in-law (probably William Horton) and his wife Johan; sister-in-law Maude (Horton) Bailey; sister (Margaret Longe) Smythe; brother-in-law Henry Wynchcombe (husband of Agnes Horton); wife Mary, children Thomas (eldest son), Henry, James, Edward, William, Agnes, Mary, Judith, Margaret, Margery Headge, Thomas Longe (youngest son) and a child yet to be born.
Notes
Henry Longe (d. 1535) left four sons according to his will. Along with many families they married into, they all became successful and influential merchants.
Robert of London, Mercer, c. 1506-1552, married Cecily Copinger, widow, d. 1559 [13]
Thomas of Trowbridge, c. 1508-1562, married Joan Yerbury of Batcombe, d. 1582[13]
Henry of Whaddon, c. 1510-1558, married Mary Horton, d. 1558 [13]
The death date of 17 October is incorrect as his will was written on the 20th October 1558 and proved on 17 November 1558. The will of Henry Longe of Whaddon (1558).[14][15] It seems that date has been assumed from another Henry Longe buried in London on that date.Whitehouse-2064 05:13, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Please could you detach the parents of this profile as they are incorrect (see profile comments below)?. if you would like to put this profile up for adoption (but not his parents) I would gladly take him on.
this profile's mother was Johane, his brothers were Robert in London, Thomas, William, Henry and sister Margery, brother in law John Smythe and uncle John Longe 'the younger" (Henry's brother). Henry of Draycott https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/918365:5111 had children Elizabeth, John, Edmunde, Richard & Robert.
I will be breaking this line. Currently the parents of this Henry Longe of Waddon are shown as Henry Longe and Eleanor Wrottesley. This is incorrect as is clearly shown by the PhD thesis of John Gaisford. He is the son of Henry Longe of Semington who left a will dated 1535 - Henry Long of Semington is not the same as Henry Longe of Draycote Cerne (d. 1558) who married Eleanor Wrottesley.
Also, none of the children of Henry Longe of Semington match the known children of Henry Longe of Draycote Cerne (d. 1558) and Eleanor Wrottesley.
I've marked the parents as uncertain, because I could not find Henry among the children listed in other sources for Eleanor Wrottesley and her husband Henry Longe.
