Maria Marsh, the wife of Alanson Beals, was born about 1806 (birth date estimated based on age at death) in Hadley, Massachusetts. Her death record indicates that she was born in Hadley, but has blank spaces for the names of her parents.[1] No birth or baptismal record has been found; Hadley town records from the period 1805 to 1844 were destroyed in a fire.[2] Her first name is documented in various records, but her last name of Marsh is found only in the Sons of the American Revolution membership application filed in 1906 by her grandson, James Frederick Hamilton. The date of marriage is estimated from the birthdate of the first child.
At the 1840 Census, Alanson Beals was listed as head of a household in Leverett, Massachusetts. The household consisted of a man and woman ages 30 to 39 (presumably Alanson and his wife Maria), a boy age 10 to 14 (presumably Lucius), and four girls, including one under age 5 (presumably Martha), two age 5 to 9 (presumably Jane and Katherine), and one age 10 to 14 (possibly a niece, or a daughter who died young). [3]
The 1855 Massachusetts State Census recorded Alanson C. Beals, age 50, in Leverett, Massachusetts, with Maria Beals, age 49, Martha E. Beals, 14, Ellen H. Beals, 12, and George Beals, 4. All were born in Massachusetts. Alanson was described as a shoemaker.[4]
The 1865 Massachusetts State Census recorded Alanson Beals, age 60, in Leverett, with Maria Beals, 59, Martha Beals, 24, and George L. Beals, 15. All were born Massachusetts. Alanson was a shoemaker and George was a farmer. [5]

Research Notes
Mitochondrial DNA haplogroup is H6a1 or H6a1a, based on testing (23andMe) of children of two different daughters of her great-granddaughter Louise Clark Anderson. -- Note by Ellen Smith

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Maria by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Maria:
